Justice Luís Roberto Barroso, then a judge of Brazil’s supreme court, openly admitted that he asked the US to intervene in Brazil’s election process.

It is worth remembering that Barroso was also the head of Brazil’s Electoral Court (TSE) when he intervened in Congress to block the approval of printed ballots (printed vote bill), a measure that would have allowed audits and recounts in cases of suspected fraud.

Who benefits from a less transparent electoral system? Who gains, and who loses, when elections become more auditable and transparent?

These questions remain unanswered. Barroso himself will never answer them, because while still serving as Chief Justice of Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court, he resigned after being sanctioned with the loss of his US visa.

These usually are the kind of people accusing the United States of interfering in Brazil’s sovereignty.
