Narcissism as extreme self-love to the point of “egocentrism” or “grandiosity” has always been a cope that prevents people from looking at themselves (ie TDS). That this cope was codified in textbooks as the industry standard doesn’t help things. Neither does the fact that the disease itself depends on this mechanism of never reaching true self-awareness only convincing “pseudo-self-awareness” for its survival (hence Lasch: “the narcissist is a prime candidate for interminable analysis”).

Narcissism should more accurately be defined as an inability to love, or an inability to sacrifice for love. Probably because the person often doesn’t know what he himself thinks, feels or wants outside of extreme states of idealization and rage.
