@RutgersAltRoute When assessing my students, I allow them the time & prompting (as needed) to complete the activity or task. All while taking my own notes of what I’m observing & areas where I could improve to help their development within that task. At the end, I applaud them for participating.

@RutgersAltRoute I like to be as specific as possible with my students. It helps communicate to them exactly what they succeeded in. My students practice life skills so statements such as “You did a great job sorting the laundry by color” & “I’m so proud of you for being safe” make a difference.

@RutgersAltRoute Being intentional with what I say & setting reasonable expectations is crucial for my students. For example, before each activity/lesson, I say: I need quiet bodies & for you to try your best. When a student gets an answer wrong, I say try again & allow them time to succeed.

@RutgersAltRoute As a SPED teacher, I prioritize building my students up & celebrating all their successes. I communicate how proud of them I am through words & my actions (extra time with preferred items). With materials, all assignments & activities are adapted to meet their specific needs.

@RutgersAltRoute I try to help empower my students by praising any and all success. Small and big wins are celebrated through words of affirmation and verbal praise. I also empower my students by communicating to them that their feelings matter to me & I am there to support them best.

@RutgersAltRoute The most beneficial way to accommodate my students in their learning is to modify all lessons to meet them where they’re at. For example, using simplified structure when reading articles & material, providing picture symbols to match and providing real life objects to help.

@RutgersAltRoute As a SPED teacher, it is my duty to create an inclusive learning environment. I am given many opportunities to do so through flexible seating arrangements, PEC symbols displayed & more. A challenge I face is being able to meet all specific needs for my students at all times.

@RutgersAltRoute (A3) I strongly believe communication is the key to strong, healthy relationships. I maintain open lines of communication with parents through email always & phone when needed/requested. With colleagues, I make an effort to build good rapports to allow helpful conversation.

@RutgersAltRoute (A2) I pay close attention to how my students interact and treat one another. If there is an instance of maltreatment or inappropriate behavior, I immediately discuss it with my student on ways to improve & discuss with the other student how to protect themselves. #TeacherEd

@RutgersAltRoute A5: I struggle with finding the time to explore & learn how to use new tech & programming. With everything else on my teacher-plate, it’s tough to utilize tech when I have to learn how to use it 1st to see if they can be adapted to fit my students’ needs.

@RutgersAltRoute A4: My students are non-verbal so it is incredibly important to stay in contact with parents. Mainly using email, I discuss my students’ progress & well-being. I also share their progress weekly along with areas of learning focused on throughout the week.

@RutgersAltRoute A3: Through email, Google Drives, Paradigm & more, I am able to collaborate with fellow teachers in sharing ideas, materials, data & content. This allows us to work together without always meeting in-person when it’s tough to schedule meetings.

@RutgersAltRoute A2: When utilizing individual iPads for instruction, some immediately want to go on YouTube or a preferred site/ app. This often leads to displays of non-compliant or maladaptive behaviors. Redirection is required from my staff & I to get the student back on track & on task.

Technology plays a huge role in my classroom and keeping my students engaged in the learning process. It is used for group lessons, morning meetings, educational sites, movement & social skills.
