Chris was privately educated at Cheltenham College, and trained to be a Church of England priest while later working for the #BBC. He was once a member of the Conservative Party.

Chris is in an unusual position in that he currently holds two Minister of State portfolios - for Data Protection and Telecoms and for Creative Industries, Arts and Tourism. I wonder if he’s collecting two salaries?

There’s no end to Chris’ talents: politician, media personality, author, campaigner and much more. He’s involved with no end of committees and occasionally directing expletives at the Speaker. Chris has shown himself to have been a naughty boy on occasions.

Chris voted to invade Iraq and, more recently, was heavily involved with Keir Starmer in derailing the @theSNP ‘s motion for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza.

For all his noble achievements (misdemeanours notwithstanding), Chris was recently awarded a knighthood. 🗡️

Chris is one of the more well known politicians at Westminister and one who has exploited the system and loopholes to make a tidy profit for himself in his 24 years as an MP. If anyone’s done any crying it’s been Chris himself - all the way to the bank.

During the expenses scandal, Chris was found to have flipped his second home twice. It was also noted how much in donations he’d received at that time - £92,000 in five years.

£2,000 from Rockridge Partners.

£2,000 from banker Anthony George Watson.

In his role as a culture Minister, Chris is a man about town and has received hospitality and tickets from many institutions for concerts, plays and events. 🎤🎸🎭🎻

With his £93,904 salary (x2?), expenses, housing allowances, generous donations, freebies, perks, media appearances, book royalties and much more, Chris has partied, laughed and cried in more ways than one at Westminister over the years.🥳🍾🍹

On 9th July 2025, Chris interrupted his busy schedule to vote for for the welfare/PIP cuts that will result in further hardship for people who are disabled and unwell. Chris also voted to scrap the #WinterFuelPayment to pensioners 🥶 and voted to retain the two child benefit cap which ‘significantly contributes to child poverty’ in the UK. 😢

My full support to my Labour colleagues who have been suspended over opposition to disability cuts.

Alongside nearly 50 of us, they were simply standing up for their disabled constituents and following their consciences.

Challenging policies that harm our communities, that damage Labour's support and that make a Reform government much more likely is a key role of Labour backbenchers. The Prime Minister should be listening to these voices, not punishing them.

After the suspension of myself and others last year for opposing the two-child benefit cap, I had hoped the leadership would take a different approach to backbenchers. Sadly, it isn’t yet doing so. To help stop a Reform Government, it really must do so.
