In my 25+ years in business, I've seen more than my fair share of closed doors 🚪. Sometimes I’ve expected it, other times not. But every time a door closed, another one opened – many with unexpected paths and a surprise or two along the way 🌟.
In my career, and especially as I guide others to build their best business and best life, I always talk about gratitude 🙏. For the doors that open and the ones that close. They both teach you the most valuable lessons.

The outcome? A team that’s committed to each of our personal and business goals 🎯. A team that’s not afraid to fail, and who’s open and honest with me. Family first, because we can be more successful when we all feel valued 💖.

This policy so far, has supported the 9 of us through tough times and has helped build a more resilient and committed team. If we miss a client deadline because of it? Well, I absorb that for them or find a work around.
My friends, there is always a workaround.
When I hire, it’s important to talk about family and personal well-being🥇. I encourage my team to take care of their family and themselves >> and if I see burnout, frustration, know there’s sickness or family stuff going on that needs some attention >> I honor that.
Here’s the thing, when leaders model family-first behavior, it creates a culture of support and understanding 🤗. It encourages team loyalty and satisfaction, and there’s less chance they’ll burnout, get frustrated and quit. Plus, it helps you as the leader or business owner too.
In the end, you will be more productive and creative because the stressors of life and family will be taken care of 🌟. Plus, a family-first approach can be a significant differentiator for attracting and retaining top talent who value work-life balance.
Staying up till 3am to write a presentation because I didn’t want to miss a soccer game ⚽. Speeding home to pick up 5 kids at the bus stop; (thank you to the policeman who followed me home because he didn’t believe me and didn't give me a ticket 🚔).
For me, family first meant not just staying home when someone was sick 🤒. It was not being able to get everything done before a family vacation 🌴. (Get over it, Robin).
Over the last 25 years in business, there’s one lesson I’ve learned and hope I’ve shared it enough with my team. >> It’s to take care of family first 👨👩👧👦. Even if it means letting some business slide momentarily, the long-term benefits outweigh helping your family.
