There is 2 types of wealth today that did not exist in the same way in the past

1)Time freedom - due to speed of growth of innovation from inception both founders and investors can achieve wealth and time freedom that no generation in history could achieve - its not about the house or things - most people poor or not have relatively the same experience now apart from whether they control their time

2)Relative status games - In the past a better home or a better car was actually better - no relative judgment needed. Today its more about branding and preference.
Is a Rolex better than a Apple watch?
Is a Mercedes better than a Tesla?
Is a house better than a hotel apartment?
Much more focus on perception than reality.
People are too focused on this as historically this showed an actual difference in living standard but today it does not

My personal thought is therefore that the focus should be on 1 and that for 2 you just do what you want.

Dont live a lie for others:
ie if you prefer convenience then live in the city
if you prefer quiet live in the suburbs
But dont buy a big house on the hill just because thats more "prestigious" or live in the city because its more expensive

Decisions related to 2 should be done void of money considerations - "This is how I want to live" as opposed to "I need to upgrade" thinking. Think about it from an absolute view-whats better for you not whats better relative to others.
