President Trump has just issued an ultimatum to Iran, that they open up the strait of Hormuz in 48 hours, or he will destroy more Iranian energy infrastructure.

Iran immediately countered with a threat of its own, saying they will attack American and Allied energy, oil, and desalinization infrastructure in retaliation.

In any case, they definitely will not open the Strait, and in fact have claimed they will close it even more firmly.

This as President Trump variously claims the war is over, he has destroyed Iran, but then has deployed additional ground combat power, ground attack A10 fighter, jets, Apache gunships, and other marine power.

Also at the same time, he is dropping sanctions on Iranian oil, and removing sanctions from Russia selling oil in desperate attempts to keep the price of oil below $100 a barrel.

This is a batch of irrational, contradictory, and ultimately, self-defeating actions, devoid of any strategy; none of them will bring a successful conclusion to this war.

This is a very dangerous time for the United States and our allies, owing entirely to starting a war of choice we no longer have control over.

The rites and sacrifices of the Old Covenant pointed toward the coming Messiah. After Christ, to continue those rites implies that the Messiah has not yet come.

But the Church proclaims that the Son of God became incarnate, suffered, died, and rose again for the salvation of the world.

As St. Thomas Aquinas taught:

“After the Passion of Christ, the legal ceremonies were not only dead but deadly.”
(Summa Theologiae I–II, q.103, a.4)

The Cross fulfilled what those sacrifices foreshadowed. To restore them would deny the fulfillment of Christ.

Catholics can have no part in such practices.
