A lot of language rules are really just power moves. When we judge how people talk, we’re often judging who they are. Linguistics reminds us: all language varieties work. #fa25211o2

The idea that Black children are verbally deprived ignores linguistic reality. Myth 13 shows they often grow up highly skilled in complex dialect systems, code-switching, and verbal play. This isn’t deprivation, it’s linguistic richness. #fa25211o2

Bad grammar isn’t sloppy, it’s social judgment. Myth 12 shows that non-standard dialects follow consistent rules and patterns. Labeling them as lazy or careless confuses difference with deficit. #fa25211o2

Myth 11 shows that calling Italian beautiful or German ugly is a learned social bias. Infants who acquire language through universal, innate processes don’t hear beauty or ugliness at all. To a child, every language is equally learnable. #fa25211o2

First language acquisition proves children master whichever language surrounds them or anything else following the same stages. If languages were inherently pleasant or harsh, kids would struggle differently. They don’t. It isn’t about sound, but attitude. #fa25211o2

From babbling to full grammar by age 5, children show that human language capacity is universal. So when people claim Italian sounds better than German, they’re revealing social conditioning, not linguistic reality. #fa25211o2

One fascinating aspect of this evolution of language is the inherent meaning of words being collectively agreed upon to take on new or multiple meanings. #fa25211o2

[Rob Tee @RobTee_]

This evolution is expedited, comparatively to the traditional evolution of English, through the power of modern technology; namely social media. #fa25211o2

The evolution of the English language (in our current era) is largely influenced by the younger generations through the "Semantics of Slang." #fa25211o2

The issue isn’t kids losing language skills, it’s the belief they aren’t speaking “Standard English.” Milroy highlights that such judgments often stem from class-based prejudices, not real decline. #fa25211o2

[Rob Tee @RobTee_]

Milroy argues that children’s language competence is as strong as ever (in fact, literacy has improved). What’s fading is the notion of a “golden age” of perfect English. #fa25211o2

@LlulianaV17 This is a really cool element of semantics (and language in general) because it feels like a natural and organic way to inscribe meaning to words based on how they "feel."

[Rob Tee @RobTee_]

Semantics reminds us that meaning isn’t fixed, it’s built through thought, culture, and use. Behind every sentence is logic, emotion, and shared understanding. The study of meaning is really the study of how we think. #fa25211o2

[Rob Tee @RobTee_]

Words don’t just label things they build relationships. Sense gives a word its stable meaning, while reference links it to real things in context. “Pen” means the same in theory but refers differently to Jack’s or Betty’s pen. #fa25211o2

[Rob Tee @RobTee_]

Semantics is how language creates meaning. It’s not just about words, but how we connect signs, concepts, and the world—why cow” means a cow and not something else. Language works because our minds agree on invisible meanings.#fa25211o2

[Rob Tee @RobTee_]

@AllieFALL25 Generalized statements like the myth can be misleading. We all have different experiences, and yours disproves the myth! Maybe people talk more when it's something interesting to them? Personally, I'm not gonna have a lot to say about something I don't know about.#fa25e211o2

[Rob Tee @RobTee_]

What struck me in phonology: tiny shifts in sound don’t create new words, yet they shape how we hear English. It’s wild that our brains sort chaos into patterns so effortlessly.
#fa25211o2

[Rob Tee @RobTee_]

Phonology shows that language isn’t just raw sound but a system. Phonemes are abstract categories that distinguish meaning (rip vs lip), while allophones are context-based variations that don’t change meaning.

@EmmaBurkeyNSU This is a perfect example of evolution of language based on efficiency and accessibility. Some people may consider this decay, but it is clearly beneficial to you, so that is a representation of it being a myth.
