Loin de la légende de la couturière visionnaire, les archives déclassifiées de la Défense révèlent l'agente F-7124 de l'Abwehr, nom de code : "Westminster".

Pendant que les Parisiennes subissaient les privations et l'occupation allemande, Gabrielle Chanel sablait le champagne au Ritz, devenu le quartier général du Troisième Reich, dans les bras du baron von Dincklage, un redoutable officier du renseignement militaire allemand.

Mais la créatrice n'était pas seulement une amante de la collaboration : c'était une prédatrice financière qui a utilisé les lois raciales imposées par Hitler pour s'enrichir.

En mai 1941, elle écrit au régime de Vichy pour tenter de voler la société Parfums Chanel à ses associés, les frères Wertheimer, qui ont dû fuir les persécutions.

Sa requête est d'une froideur absolue. Elle y exige noir sur blanc l'expropriation de ses partenaires : "Les Parfums Chanel sont encore la propriété de Juifs (...) je vous demande de bien vouloir m'adjuger la totalité des actions", arguant de son droit de priorité d'Aryenne.

Sa compromission va bien au-delà de la trahison financière. En 1943, les nazis l'intègrent à l'opération secrète "Modellhut".

Le but de cette mission ? Utiliser l'amitié intime de Chanel avec Winston Churchill pour tenter de négocier un accord de paix séparé entre le Troisième Reich et la Grande-Bretagne.

À la Libération, elle est arrêtée par la Résistance. Pourtant, elle ne sera jamais jugée ni condamnée pour sa collaboration active.

Elle est mystérieusement relâchée au bout de quelques heures et part s'exiler confortablement en Suisse. La raison de cette impunité totale ? L'intervention secrète de Winston Churchill en personne, soucieux d'étouffer un procès public qui aurait pu révéler les sympathies pro-nazies d'une partie de la haute société britannique.

Interrogée plus tard sur sa liaison avec l'officier allemand, elle balayera l'Histoire par cette phrase d'un cynisme écœurant : "Un homme, quand on a mon âge, on ne regarde pas son passeport !"

L'industrie du luxe préfère aujourd'hui célébrer la femme libre qui a émancipé les corps avec la petite robe noire.

Les registres militaires racontent plutôt l'histoire d'une antisémite forcenée et opportuniste qui a vendu son pays au Troisième Reich pour tenter de s'assurer le monopole de son parfum.

The New York Times told its readers in 1936 that Stalin's Moscow show trials were legitimate legal proceedings. Walter Duranty had already spent years laundering Soviet atrocities through the paper's pages, and the pattern held: the Times reported the confessions of Zinoviev, Kamenev, and fourteen other defendants as genuine admissions of guilt.

Every single defendant had been tortured. NKVD interrogators used sleep deprivation, beatings, and threats against family members to extract confessions to crimes that never happened. Zinoviev and Kamenev were shot in August 1936 within days of their sentencing.

Stalin bears responsibility. But so does a press institution that chose ideological sympathy over basic skepticism, and paid no price for that choice. The Times won a Pulitzer in 1932 partly on Duranty's work. It never returned that prize.

This is what state power without accountability produces: mass murder dressed up in courtroom procedure, and credentialed journalists applauding the costume. You are living with the downstream consequences of a media culture that learned it could cover for state violence and face no professional reckoning. The incentive was set then, and it has never fully reversed.

On the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York City, the Board of Peace held a critical briefing on Gaza, the transitional process, new projects, and perspectives from members and contributing states. What stood out during and after the event was the tone and energy of the presenters and members, from Jared Kushner, Steve Witkoff, and Tony Blair to the Board’s Executive Director, Nikolay Mladenov, and the head of the Palestinian technocratic committee, or NCAG, Dr. Ali Shaath. They were willing to answer tough questions and address critiques and skepticism directly. More than anything, that candor gave me a sense of confidence I had not felt before. This was not PR or spin, but direct information and plain facts about areas of uncertainty, along with a clear commitment to transparency and openness. I also saw infrastructure, staffing, and support systems scaling up to prepare for the launch of large-scale projects.

Much remains uncertain about the path forward, including the Israeli government’s position after the upcoming elections and whether Hamas’s disarmament can proceed as originally envisioned. There is also the question of how upcoming U.S. elections may affect attitudes toward the Board of Peace; one hopes this does not become a partisan issue, given Gaza’s urgent need for progress. Another challenge is ensuring that obstacles do not derail or indefinitely delay implementation, which is sequential and tied to verification-based milestones.

Still, the room was full of serious people with serious teams working toward real progress in a multilateral effort, an especially difficult task given the context, trauma, devastation, distrust, skepticism, need for new approaches, and imperative to avoid past reconstruction mistakes while building a deradicalized, demilitarized, prosperous, and promising Gaza for its Palestinian residents.
