In September 1965, with Indian forces having already breached Pakistani territory, the situation was volatile and the air thick with the tension of impending collapse.

Lahore — the heart of West Pakistan — stood perilously exposed. Amidst the chaos, a young officer from the 1st East Bengal Regiment emerged as a figure of resolute defiance: Major Ziaur Rahman.

Stationed in Khem Karan, only miles from the gates of Lahore, Zia and his troops confronted wave after wave of Indian assaults. He held the line with unwavering resolve, transforming defense into a statement of purpose. When Lahore’s fate teetered on the edge, it was this Bengali major — far from his native delta — who fought to keep the road to the city closed.

His mission was simple: hold the line, save the city.

Through those harrowing days of battle, Zia’s leadership never wavered. Under relentless fire and against mounting odds, he rallied his men — forging cohesion in the trenches, turning fear into resilience.

For his gallantry, he was awarded the Hilal-i-Jurat, Pakistan’s second-highest military honor.

This was before there was Bangladesh.

Before declarations. Before flags. Before the world knew the name.

He was a soldier of Bengal, a hero before a nation was born.

আগামী ডিসেম্বর থেকে ২০২৬ সালের জুন মাসের মধ্যে জাতীয় নির্বাচনের লক্ষ্য নিয়ে সংস্কার কার্যক্রম দ্রুত এগিয়ে নেয়ার তাগিদ দিয়েছেন প্রধান উপদেষ্টা এবং জাতীয় ঐকমত��য কমিশনের চেয়ারম্যান প্রফেসর মুহাম্মদ ইউনূস। ঐকমত্য কমিশনের দুই সদস্যের সঙ্গে এক বৈঠকে তিনি এই তাগিদ দেন। গতকাল শনিবার বিকালে প্রধান উপদেষ্টার সরকারি বাসভবন যমুনায় এ বৈঠক অনুষ্ঠিত হয়।এতে অংশ নেন জাতীয় ঐকমত্য কমিশনের সহ-সভাপতি প্রফেসর আলী রীয়াজ এবং সদস্য ড. বদিউল আলম মজুমদার। প্রধান উপদেষ্টার বিশেষ সহকারী (ঐকমত্য গঠন) মনির হায়দার এ সময় উপস্থিত ছিলেন।

বৈঠকে প্রফেসর আলী রীয়��জ ও ড. বদিউল আলম মজুমদার জাতীয় ঐকমত্য কমিশনের কার্যক্রমের অগ্রগতি সম্পর্কে কমিশনের চেয়ারম্যানকে অবহিত করেন। তারা জানান যে, বিভিন্ন সংস্কার কমিশনের সুপারিশসমূহ নিয়ে রাজনৈতিক দলগুলোর সঙ্গে পৃথক পৃথকভাবে আলোচনা চলমান রয়েছে। শনিবার পর্যন্ত মোট ৮টি দলের সঙ্গে আলোচনা সম্পন্ন হয়েছে। আগামী বৃহস্পতিবার ব��ংলাদেশ জাতীয়তাবাদী দল - বিএনপি‘র সঙ্গে আলোচনার সময়সূচি নির্ধারণ করা আছে।

তাঁরা আরও জানান যে, সংস্কার কার্যক্রমের বিষয়ে জনমত যাচাই এবং সে বিষয়ে জনসচেতনতা সৃষ্টির লক্ষ্যে বিভিন্ন কর্মসূচি গ্রহণ করা হয়েছে।

এ সময় কমিশনের সভাপতি এবং প্রধান উপদেষ্টা প্রফেসর মুহাম্মদ ইউনূস আগামী ডিসেম্বর থেকে ২০২৬ সালের জুন মাসের মধ্যে জাতীয় নির্বাচন অনুষ্ঠানের লক্ষ্য নিয়ে রাজনৈতিক দলের সঙ্গে আলোচনা তথা সামগ্রিক সংস্কার প্রক্রিয়া এগিয়ে নেয়ার তাগিদ দেন।
