"You're the Inspiration" was originally written for Kenny Rogers! David Foster was in the studio with Kenny and asked Peter Cetera to create a song. Cetera made the basis of chords, traveled to Italy, finished the lyrics inspired by the baroque rooms and works of Michelangelo ("Michelangelo, you should know..." became "You're the inspiration"), but Kenny ended up not recording. Peter and David took the track back, re-recorded it for Chicago 17 (1984) and made it one of the band's biggest hits of the 80s (#3 on the Billboard Hot 100). It was one of the last big hits with Peter Cetera before he left the band in 1985.
