Join me this coming Sunday evening from 1930hrs -2030hrs on DSTV Channel 288 f as I host former news editor (The Herald) Dr Takunda Maodza (PhD) and we discuss factional politics in the ruling ZANU P.F Party as portrayed by media.
The real measure of Chinese investment in Zimbabwe is not how many deals are signed, but how much productive capacity remains in Zimbabwe.
That transformation is becoming visible.
At the Arcadia lithium operation in Goromonzi, Chinese-owned Huayou Cobalt has invested US$400 million in a lithium-sulphate processing plant with capacity of about 50,000 tonnes annually. In April, it produced Africa’s first commercial shipment of lithium sulphate - taking Zimbabwe beyond simply exporting lithium concentrate.
At Manhize, Chinese-backed Dinson Iron and Steel is targeting expansion from 600,000 tonnes to 1.8 million tonnes of annual steel capacity. Lithium connects Zimbabwe to the global battery economy; steel feeds construction, engineering, infrastructure and manufacturing.
But foreign capital must operate alongside strong regulation, environmental responsibility, worker protection, local procurement and skills transfer.
The objective is not investment at any cost. It is investment aligned with national interest.
Success must ultimately be measured in jobs, technology, infrastructure, exports and industries created.
That is how mineral wealth becomes industrial wealth.

“I think, just lastly, to make the point and really echo the message that the IMC has sounded: someone who violates a law, or who is alleged to have violated a law—whether it is someone accused of theft or someone accused of illegally entering a country—does not lose or forfeit their inherent human dignity and human rights.
That is why we do not have vigilante justice in South Africa. We have due process in this country, and it applies to every kind of alleged legal violation.
A person does not forfeit their right to life, dignity, and humanity simply because they have broken the law or are alleged to have broken the law. That is what our Constitution stands for. It is part of what sets our Constitution apart and part of what makes us a country that the world looks up to.
We must never allow a narrative in which people are dehumanised or where there is an assumption that they forfeit their right to be treated as human beings because they have violated, or are alleged to have violated, a particular law.
That is the perspective we are promoting and articulating without contradiction.
No person has the right to enforce immigration laws outside the authority of the state, demand papers, or demand identification. No person has the right to incite violence. No person has the right to engage in vigilantism. No person has the right to engage in xenophobia or any other discriminatory practice.
From a Home Affairs perspective, we take that very seriously because we are ultimately responsible for managing civil registration, population affairs, and immigration in South Africa. We will not tolerate anyone using allegations or suspicions about an individual’s immigration status to violate their inherent human dignity or their constitutional rights.
It simply cannot, and will not, be allowed to stand.”
South Africa’s Home Affairs Minister, Dr. Leon Schreiber
This young South African gave South African a bitter pill to swallow.
He’s young but made Jacinta and Ubuntu warrior look like brainless children.
How old is the kid again 🥺❤️
