@The_BoleynBoys I’ll probably get stick for this but I think the damage is already done at this football club and there is not much we can do unless there is a miracle we will never be the same club again since the stadium move alone
On this day in 2023 West Ham beat Brighton and Hove Albion 3-1 at the Amex Stadium in front of 31,508.
The West Ham goals came from James Ward-Prowse, Jarrod Bowen and Michail Antonio.
The stadium move does not have correlation to the trophy win. The players brought to the club and any financial investment has been drive by the massive TV deal. West Ham have always been able to attract players due to the location of the club. Signing players like Craig Dawson, Said Benrahma, Kurt Zouma, Pablo Fornals, Vladimir Coufal, Flynn Downes, Danny Ings etc was not down to moving to a new stadium.
As someone who was very pro move at the time I was satisfied that the club has answered all the concerns.
But the answers were just false. And what they did was essentially negate any form of protest at the time by showing disingenuous images and giving answers to concerns that were just not true.
The day West Ham moved into the stadium the pitch was too far away from the stands. This is still the case no matter what colour carpet they use.
There will be those who are happy with the stadium and that is absolutely fine. I agree that more people being able to watch West Ham is a great thing.
But the stadium move has been a disaster and has altered the club in ways that is difficult to articulate and quantify in footballing terms.
It’s not a black and white issue.
I still believe moving was something West Ham needed to do with Arsenal, Chelsea and Tottenham dominating London football.
But this particular move and this stadium was the wrong one and has left West Ham as a club that is more of a tribute act to once was.
The modern Premier League game has added to this feeling.
Under David Moyes West Ham put a team together (somewhat stumbled on this) and all issues with the stadium were forgotten because ultimately people just want their team to win games.
To conclude, I can only speak for myself when I say I hate the stadium. I’m missing more games than ever. But I don’t expect anyone to care about this, I’m replaceable. We all are.
I’ve got my memories and my opinion on what I think West Ham are and what they have been about.
It’s a different club now.
