Data, opportunity, understanding and realisation of the need to challenge status quo. Can these things help bring equity to boards and exec teams in social housing? Great to hear from fellow Jigsaw board member Tim!
I didn't get the name of the school which the young people go to but they were wearing grey blazers and red (and I think white) stripped ties...if anyone in Manchester knows which school near Trafford that might be...
We got him to street level but couldn't find a cab to take his mobility scooter which he refused to leave behind. In the end, a neighbour happened to walk past and helped the elderly man home and said that they would call and wait for an ambulance from there.
So...the young people were amazing! 17 and 18, and they totally took control of the situation and responsibility, I just followed what they said. Inspired. Saddened... a 9 hour wait in the cold for an ambulance was the only advice the operator could give us.
The operator assessed the elderly man and said that it would be up to a 9 hour wait for an ambulance. We asked a tram driver if there was anything he could do to help and he said no. We had a discussion with the man and decided that we would try and get him into a cab to the MRI
The elderly man said that someone had already called an ambulance and he had been waiting 45mins. Whilst YP 1 spoke with the emergency services a friend- YP 2 came along and said that they had done a 6 month medical course and started to support/advise the elderly person.
Today at Trafford Bar tram I witnessed the most inspiring and saddening situation. An elderly person was on a scooter bleeding from his head. I stopped to see if he was ok. As I spoke to him a young person in their school uniform stopped and said he would call 999.

…as they possibly sit there qualifying why they are speaking on this topic. Of course you can have empathy instead of lived experience but power nearly always sits with those who aren’t marginalised and therefore don’t have lived experience.
At #Housing2023#keynotetheatre listening to the panel discuss the value of lived experience in government and decision making on housing policy. Can’t help but think the panel has misunderstood the call for lived experience in decision making…
