This isn’t just stupid, it’s false. Maine is not “unceded” land. The Chairman of the Maine Democratic Party, despite being a lawyer, is just factually wrong about that status of tribal land claims.

The Wabanaki tribes ceded their land claims when they agreed to the Maine Indian Claims Settlement Act. President Carter signed the act on October 10, 1980.

The tribal governing bodies of the the Passamaquoddy Tribe, the Penobscot Nation, and the Houlton Band of Maliseet Indians (later the Aroostook Band of Micmacs) unanimously approved the agreement. In exchange, they ceded all claims to land owned by federal, state, and local governments, as well as private parties.

The tribes specifically agreed to extinguish and release all claims or potential future claims to land in exchange for $81.5 million, which was split between cash and land. They took the money and forfeited their legal or moral claim to the land.

Anyone blathering about “stolen” or “unceded” land is just a moron who doesn’t know Maine history.

You can argue that the 1980 act was a raw deal. It was! You can argue that the implementing legislation wasn’t favorable enough to the tribes. That’s true! You can argue that the tribal elders embezzled all the money and made shitty decisions about what land to acquire. Also true!

But you cannot say the land is unceded, because it is ceded in every possible legal definition of the term.

His recent op-ed in the SF Chronicle demonstrates his almost total lack of knowledge about the reality of ranching and the nature of rangeland management. "Rewilding" as described by Bouley is an absurd fantasy, so over the top it's laughable.
Before he was promoted to his current position at the turtle group, he was hired by the West Marin anti-ranch team to write a report claiming to show that the public was united against ranching. The data set he used: comments orchestrated by the anti-ranch team itself.

I'm pretty much agnostic on @Elon but if a journalist (or anyone) says "Many ppl don't like you," the correct response is, "So?"
Bc the whole thing is so damned high school. "Ew, ppl don't LIKE you! Nyah, nyah!" It's a mean girl bully's idiot taunt. It suggests you need to Do Something In Order to Become Tolerable To People Who Think They're The Official Arbiters of All That's "Cool" or "Moral" in the World.

As St. Catherine of Siena rightly pointed out, "love follows knowledge." In order for ppl to come to like you, they must first understand you (or think they do, b/c without a firsthand, face-to-face, often extended, experience of someone, we usually don't know them at all).
Common human respect is all we can ask (and offer) to others, until we can actually get a chance to know them. Love follows knowledge. And superficial knowledge of another is rarely enough to meet the mark.
Perhaps part of becoming open enough to offer respect, until you can get to know someone, involves finally leaving 11th grade behind, and growing up.

What about the armed Palestinian terrorists who carried out a shooting attack against innocent Israeli civilians this morning, murdering two people, Yuval Ezra and Benayahu Mellet, and injuring several others?

This was the third terrorist attack targeting Israelis in the area in the past 24 hours. Yesterday, one civilian was stabbed, and just hours later another was wounded in a separate stabbing attack in northern Samaria.

If you truly care about protecting civilians, you cannot ignore terrorism when Israelis are the victims.

49 days ago we landed in the USA to follow our country at the World Cup. We had no idea it would turn into the trip of a lifetime.

Thank you to everyone who followed along, and to all the people we met who made this journey even more special. We honestly don’t have the words to express how grateful we are for everything you did for us.

This trip exceeded every expectation we had. We came here with an open mind, wanting to experience as much of the country as possible. I still remember telling my friends on the flight to Atlanta that I hoped we’d get to meet a few locals on this trip. Now we’re flying home with friends all across the USA.

Before we came, we heard so many stereotypes and warnings about America. People told us about safety concerns, that they might check our social media at the border, and all kinds of other things. None of it matched our experience. This was probably the most welcoming country we’ve ever visited.

So if you have the chance to travel, do it. The world isn’t nearly as bad as the media often makes it seem. 99% of people are awesome!

I heard this quote somewhere during the World Cup, and I think it sums up our experience perfectly:

“If you want to hate the world, watch the news. If you want to love it, travel it.”
