Hayek understood that governments rarely expand their power by admitting they want more control. They call it compassion, safety or social justice, then suggest that anyone who objects must support hatred.

That is the danger surrounding Mark Carney’s Bill C-9. Punishing violence, threats and deliberate obstruction is legitimate. But C-9 also expands hate-related criminal law, creates a specific hate-motivated offence, criminalizes certain public displays, and removes the specific good-faith religious-opinion defence.

Then look at Edmonton. Police explicitly encourage people to report both hate crimes and non-criminal hate incidents through an online system. Their own example includes an argument over a parking spot involving a racial insult. Every report is reviewed by hate-crime investigators and could lead to contact from the unit.

That reporting system was not created by C-9, so the facts should not be blurred. But it reveals the larger direction: citizens are being encouraged to report one another to police for conduct that authorities openly acknowledge may not be criminal.

Carney calls it protection. Critics will reasonably call it a government-backed snitch culture.

A free country should punish violence, threats and genuine criminal intimidation. It should not train citizens to view the police as referees for every insult, argument or offensive opinion.

Hayek’s warning remains clear: noble language opens the gate, bureaucracy rolls in behind it, and freedom becomes conditional on official approval.

Dostoevsky understood political radicals better than most modern commentators.

In Demons, Pyotr explains that revolutionary movements are held together by status, sentimentality and fear of independent thought.

Give people titles, committees and appointments, and they feel important. Give them an approved cause, and they feel morally superior. Give them a ready-made opinion, and they never have to risk thinking for themselves.

You can see the pattern in Canada and Manitoba.

Government, universities, unions, bureaucracies and publicly funded activist groups increasingly speak the same language, repeat the same slogans and reward the same opinions. People learn quickly which views bring praise, funding and promotion, and which ones bring isolation or punishment.

The most disturbing part of Dostoevsky’s warning is that shared guilt can bind a movement more tightly than shared beliefs. Once everyone has defended the same failures, ignored the same damage or helped silence the same dissenters, admitting error becomes personally dangerous. The group must keep going because too many reputations depend on pretending it was right.

That helps explain why failed policies rarely disappear. Whether it is health care, crime, education, energy, immigration or government spending, the people responsible seldom admit the obvious. They rename the program, increase the budget and blame somebody else.

Dostoevsky’s deeper point was that when a society tears down its moral foundations, the empty space does not remain empty. It gets filled by ideology, resentment, conformity and power.

Canada and Manitoba are not immune. We are watching institutions reward obedience while treating independent thought as a threat. Pyotr would recognize the system immediately.

We welcome the Leader of the Official Opposition's call to list Kata'ib Hizballah as a terrorist entity.

In May, we urged the Government of Canada to take this step and strengthen measures to ensure terrorist organizations and their proxies cannot operate in Canada.

The warning signs are clear.

Toronto Police Chief Myron Demkiw has identified a "similar modus operandi" of criminals-for-hire targeting the Jewish community and diplomatic sites. Secretary of State Ruby Sahota has acknowledged that a foreign entity is behind attacks on Toronto synagogues. And Canada's Integrated Terrorism Assessment Centre has warned there is a “realistic possibility” that Iran’s Islamic regime is directing local criminal elements to target Canada's Jewish community.

It’s time to get tough on politically motivated violence and terror.

This is what happens when a Prime Minister spends 9 years pushing toxic woke identity politics, dividing and subdividing people by race, gender, vaccine status, religion, region, age, wealth, etc.

On top of driving people apart, you systematically break what used to bring us together, saying Canada is a “post-national state” with “no core identity.”

You erased our veterans and military, the Famous Five and even Terry Fox from our passport to replace them with meaningless squirrels, snowflakes and a drawing of yourself swimming as a boy.

You opened the borders to terrorists and lawbreakers and called anyone who questioned it racist.

You send out your MPs to say one thing in a mosque and the opposite in a synagogue, one thing in a mandir and the opposite in a gurdwara.

You passed laws that release rampant offenders from prison within hours of their 80th arrest.

And what is the result? Assassinations on Canadian soil, firebombings of synagogues, extremist violence against mandirs and gurdwaras, over 100 churches burned or vandalized (with barely any condemnation from you), all for a total 251% more hate crime.

And, while you were dancing, Montreal was burning.

Nöam, a well-known Montréal kosher restaurant on Décarie Boulevard, was burned to the ground overnight. Nearby surveillance footage shows a man pouring accelerant and deliberately setting the restaurant on fire, according to reports from The Suburban. The owners are Shomer Shabbat and may not even be able to review the footage or fully absorb the destruction of their business until Shabbat ends.

The Jewish community of Montréal will stand together, support them and rebuild. In one way or another, Nöam will emerge from this stronger and more glorious than ever. Because this is what we do.

As for the motive, we already know the ritual that will follow. We will be instructed to remain calm, suspend judgment and wait patiently before calling a spade a spade.

But let us remember the context in which this occurred.

For nearly three years, Montréal’s Jewish schools, synagogues, community institutions and businesses have been threatened, vandalized, shot at and set on fire. Because “Free Palestine.” Because “From the river to the sea Palestine will be free.” Because Jew hatred has been excused, normalized and allowed to spread without meaningful consequence.

Each incident may require its own investigation. But the broader pattern does not cease to exist merely because every individual perpetrator has not left behind a written manifesto explaining his intentions.

There comes a point at which the demand for infinite proof stops functioning as legitimate caution and starts functioning as social permission to remain blind.

Whatever this investigation ultimately establishes, the owners of Nöam will not face this alone. The Jewish community of Montréal will rebuild, as we always do. But our resilience should never be mistaken for an obligation to remain silent about the conditions that made an attack like this ultimately foreseeable.

We will rebuild. But we will not remain silent.
