In 1849, Canadian Royal Artillery Gunner Robert Tait was charged with insubordination for 'wearing new trousers outside the barrack gates while drunk'. That is all.
This is medieval shoe sole repair is pieced together from the tiniest scraps of leather I've seen. It must have taken ages, and been very leaky. At the same site, other people were throwing out perfectly good shoes.
Highlights from todays trawl of post medieval posy ring inscriptions:
'Contented with my choice'
'I do not repent that I gave my consent'
'If I survive I will have five'
'When money's low this ring will go'

@FoloWatkins@MOLArchaeology This one is made of animal bone. It's too small to identify to species but London's post medieval bone workers mainly used cattle metapodials.
If anyone is in doubt as to who has the better hair between me and @theAliceRoberts , you can tune in to #diggingforbritain tonight at 8pm on BBC 2 for a live comparison. Also something about a new Roman town @MOLArchaeology found.
'I must publish something, and I only hope and pray that the most suitable thing is what is ready now - there's laziness for you!' Pliny the Younger, Letters I:2
How's that for a new years resolution?
You will all be pleased to hear that I'm making a new typology of 18th and 19th century coffin plates. At this rate there will be well over 50 before I'm done... #TypologyThursday

@petrip@britishmuseum I'd say you couldn't go wrong with my recent @BAR_Publishing book on the tools from London, out now in all good online bookstores ;-)
Glad to see Roman Tools taking their rightful place of prominence in the @britishmuseum#Nero exhibit. This tombstone shows Alcimus, who built stages for Nero's scandalous performances, surrounded by the tools of a Roman carpenter.
