A service called ISBNdb facilitates orders of up to a million books and keeps buyers anonymous. Pre-2022 books are premium because they're free of AI-generated text. A federal judge ruled the practice is fair use because eliminating the original means only one copy exists at a time. Anthropic hired the former head of Google Books partnerships to obtain "all the books in the world."

My Take
This got to me. A bookseller told 404 Media that rare books with almost no surviving copies are being fed into this pipeline. Books that survived wars, fires, and centuries of handling are being shredded so an AI can learn to write a better marketing email.
ISBNdb's website literally says "'AI company destroys two million books' is not a headline that generates sympathy," and they still built an entire business around making it happen quietly. They offer NDAs as a feature. They coach clients to call it "digital preservation."

I've covered AI companies scraping the internet, torrenting libraries, and stealing music. This is worse because it's irreversible. You can re-upload a website. You can reprint a bestseller. You can't replace the last three copies of an 18th-century botanical text once someone shreds them for training data. And the judge said it's legal. So it's going to accelerate.
"We shred rare books and offer NDAs so nobody finds out" is a legitimate business model in 2026. What a timeline.

Now that Germany is facing its own dystopian free speech crisis, with laws being manipulated to silence dissent and punish those who mock elected representatives, the time has come for Germany to have its own Free Speech Union.

Last year, investigations under Germany’s controversial Section 188 — its draconian political insult law — reached a record 4,792.

In 2024, Bavarian police raided a man’s home after he described Robert Habeck, then serving as Vice-Chancellor, as a schwachkopf, roughly translating as “dummy”.

This is not what you expect in a Western democracy.

Another law, Section 86a, which prohibits the display of Nazi symbols, has also come under fire after being used against historian Rainer Zitelmann. The historian and author of more than 30 books was threatened with jail after posting a meme on social media comparing Vladimir Putin to Adolf Hitler.

Speaking to The Telegraph, the Free Speech Union’s founder and General Secretary, Lord Young of Acton, said:

“FSU International… has been talking to various groups in Germany and trying to persuade them to set up an FSU Germany.

We hope to establish such a group within the next year.”

Dutch protest singer Sophie Straat has sparked controversy after twice telling "all white men" to move to the back of the crowd during her performances.

At the Best Kept Secret Festival in the Netherlands last month, Straat asked "all white men" to step back so that a mosh pit could be reserved for women, queer people and people of color.

She repeated the same call this week during her performance at the Ghent Festival (Gentse Feesten) in Belgium, again asking white men to move aside to create a temporary mosh pit for those groups. She also urged the audience to "put yourselves in other people's shoes more often," saying the aim was to create space for people who often feel excluded or unsafe in mosh pits.

The remarks triggered hundreds of complaints in the Netherlands and nearly 200 complaints in Belgium, with critics arguing that the comments targeted people on the basis of race and sex. Belgium's anti-discrimination body Unia and the Dutch discrimination reporting center concluded they would not pursue the matter, saying there was no evidence that white men were actually excluded from the concerts and that the remarks were made in the context of an artistic and political performance.

Meanwhile, the Dutch Public Prosecution Service is reviewing multiple criminal complaints over Straat's remarks at Best Kept Secret and has said it has not yet determined whether any criminal offense was committed.
