Deeply grateful to Professor Ronen A. Cohen for kindly sending me paper copies of The Journal for Interdisciplinary Middle Eastern Studies @JimesMiddle all the way from Israel. It is truly an honor to see my article on Japan and Iran published in this issue alongside the work of distinguished scholars.

What makes this journal especially remarkable is that Professor Cohen has, for nearly a decade, almost single-handedly built and sustained a serious, high-quality scholarly publication dedicated to rigorous and interdisciplinary research on the Middle East. In an academic world increasingly driven by bureaucracy and institutional inertia, this kind of intellectual dedication, persistence, and vision deserves tremendous respect.

I am very happy to contribute to this important project in my own small way, and I strongly encourage anyone interested in Middle Eastern politics, security, history, culture, literature, and international affairs to study the journal. It is available online for free here:

עד 1980, באיראן, הסמכת איש דת בוצעה במוסד הלימודים בו הוא למד. זו היתה מסורת שיעית בת1200 שנה. בשנה זו ח'ומייני קבע שכל הסמכה תקבל את אישור המדינה ובעצם, אם מישהו רצה להיות איש דת היה עליו ליישר קו עם האג'נדה של המשטר (שלטון איש הדת) . חוק הג'ובים של דרעי נשמע הכי קרוב לזה.
