Ebola Virus Disease outbreak confirmed in Ituri Province, DRC

Africa CDC is closely monitoring the situation and convening an urgent high-level coordination meeting today with the DRC, Uganda, South Sudan and global partners to reinforce cross-border surveillance, preparedness and outbreak response efforts.

Following consultations with DRC’s Ministry of Health and National Public Health Institute, preliminary laboratory results from L’Institut National de Recherche Biomédical - INRB Kinshasa detected Ebola virus in 13 of 20 samples tested.

About 246 suspected cases and 65 deaths have been reported, mainly in the Mongwalu and Rwampara health zones. Four deaths have been reported among laboratory-confirmed cases. Suspected cases have also been reported in Bunia, pending confirmation.

At #NSWUg2026, Gen. Katumba Wamala (@GenWamala ) underscored the significance of turning science from theory into real, visible impact in the economy.

He commended the progress being made, noting that what was once discussed as possibility is now becoming reality through practical innovations that people can see, experience, and believe in.

He emphasized the need to take these achievements beyond boardrooms and exhibitions to the wider public, encouraging more Ugandans to witness firsthand what has been built and how innovation is transforming lives. For him, this is how confidence is built, by showing that national vision can translate into tangible results.

Gen. Katumba also highlighted the importance of collective effort, calling on all stakeholders to move together in supporting Uganda’s journey toward economic transformation. His message was clear:

Uganda must remain focused, confident, and united in moving science from research into the real economy, building a future driven by innovation, capability, and shared progress.

Speaking at the launch of E-Bus Xpress during #NSWUg2026, Paul Luyima, Senior Manager Large Enterprises at MTN Uganda, highlighted the company’s role in powering the future of smart mobility through connectivity and digital innovation.

He emphasized MTN’s commitment to enabling a seamless passenger experience by providing onboard Wi-Fi, allowing passengers to stay productive while in transit.

He also underscored the importance of cashless payment systems powered by mobile money, eliminating inefficiencies associated with cash handling and improving convenience for users.

He said that MTN is deploying IoT-powered telemetry solutions to enable real-time tracking of buses, ensuring efficiency, accountability, and better route management.

Through continued collaboration with E-Bus Xpress and Kiira Motors, MTN promises to continue driving public awareness to support adoption and ensure Ugandans are well-informed about this modern transport solution.
