What annoyed me the most is blaming it on autism as if autism cause foolishness

[Arojinle @arojinle1]

My child cannot climb a wall to approach a tiger in its enclosure. That level of foolishness does not run in my family. I can't say the same for you though.

Also, climbing a very high fence to the enclosure of an animal that can kill you isn't a mistake. It's stupidity.

Finally, I hope you haven't given birth? I'd rather that you climb into a tiger's enclosure than pass this your gene along.

‘God Save Me’.

That was the graffiti (pictured below) imprinted on a car by an unknown African migrant held hostage at a trafficking house in Ghut Shaal, Janzur, in north-western Libya.

In truth, only God can save any migrant who gets stuck in Libya after abandonment by heartless Libyan traffickers and kidnappers or arrest and detention by the police. But the mortal that I only am, I am determined to save as many migrants as possible from asking God to save them after embarking on an ill-advised trip to Libya.

Therefore, starting tomorrow and for the next 20 days, I’ll be on a campaign of short videos enlightening the public on why they should steer clear of Libya. These videos will be on all social media platforms, but my primary targets are Tiktok and Facebook, where traffickers often hoodwink unsuspecting youth with fake promises of a better life.

For the first 10 days, my messages will be released in English (morning) and Pidgin (evening).

The final 10 days will be made in Hausa (morning), Igbo (afternoon) and Yoruba (evening), consequently eliminating language barriers among subliterates and illiterates, who constitute the prime target groups of traffickers.

I know some will only learn by experience and will proceed to Libya regardless of advisories to the contrary, but I also know many would stay put in Nigeria if they had access to credible information.

Migrants like ‘Para’ and Samuel who told me “I wouldn’t have come if I knew I would suffer this much”, those are my targets. So help me God!

“A tyrant must appear deeply religious. People are less likely to fear injustice from a ruler they believe is pious, and less likely to rebel because they believe the gods are on his side.”

- Aristotle, Politics, Book V, 1314b

In Politics, written during the fourth century BCE, Aristotle examined how different governments maintained power and eventually collapsed. In Book V, he explored tyranny, observing that rulers could use displays of religious devotion to strengthen their authority and discourage opposition.

Aristotle argued that a tyrant’s public image could be as important as force. Appearing devout could reduce fears of injustice and discourage rebellion by convincing subjects that divine powers supported the ruler. This was an observation about preserving tyranny, not an endorsement.

Some days ago, I saw a conversation about a woman killing her child(children) and people blamed it on post-birth hormones. I wanted to share my thought on the matter but I resisted because matters like that are delicate and very sensitive. Even if I must, any contribution to it must either come from a position of knowledge or experience.

I just finished the reading the case of Oladele v. The State decided by the Supreme Court of Nigeria in 1993. Now I can share my thoughts on it, having read a case law which deals with a mother killing her own child.

In that case, the Appellant, a mother of 3 was sent out of her matrimonial home by her husband over a misunderstanding to stay with her father. One day, after bathing the 3 children as early as 6am, she took them out of the house too a far away bush, macheted one to death, one sustained severe injuries from the cut and she returned home with one. When her father woke up and called on her, he only saw her with one of the children and asked her where the rest of the kids were and in her response she said "they were somewhere far away" and she started running away, until the father called on people who arrested her. The people began a search and found the dead child, and the other who had sustained severe injuries from the cut.

The mother was charged to Court for murder and after the trial, she was found guilty and sentenced to death. She appealed to the Court of Appeal and her appeal was dismissed. The Court of Appeal confirmed her death sentenced. She then appealed further to the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court reviewed the case and considered the defence of insanity raised by the mother, who had killed the child. According to her (both at the trial Court and Court of Appeal), she did not know what came over her to kill her own child because she loved the 3 children so dearly. She also gave evidence of the fact that she had history of mental disorder, which her husband and her father confirmed that both of them had taken her to a traditional doctor for treatment. The doctor who also treated her while she was in prison was called upon to give evidence and based on the observations and narrations by the nurses who attended to her, the appellant (the mother) was suffering from a mental illness called "schizophrenia psychosis"

The tests applied by the Court, when a defence of insanity is raised, were that:
1. the person did not have the capacity to understand what was done;

2. the person lacked the capacity to control the action; and

3. capacity to know that she should not do the act or make the omission.

The Court reasoned that where a person is taken to a mental hospital for treatment and the Doctor in charge gave evidence of insanity based on his observations, the presumption of sanity is rebutted.

In the end, the apex Court unanimously (5 Justices) concluded that she was indeed insane (suffering from mental disorder characterised by multiple psychological functions through the eyes, ears, disturbances for emotions of thinking, behaviour) found her not guilty or murder and set aside the conviction and death sentence imposed by the trial Court as confirmed by the Court of Appeal.

From the above case, and my little readings on severe postpartum disorders specifically Postpartum Psychosis, a mother can lose touch with reality and tragically harm or kill her child. But the strength of this proposition lies in the opinion of a medical expert upon proper examination and diagnosis. It is not something one can just brush aside or jump on by common sense and logic. Even by that, no sane person will decide to kill their own child just for the fun or it. There is definitely more and only experts can say.

Please, for the love of God, stop conflating postpartum depression with postpartum psychosis.

I am as an advocate for people experiencing mental health difficulties, particularly women who are too often dismissed, judged, shamed and misunderstood at the very point in their lives when they are most vulnerable.

Postpartum depression and postpartum psychosis are not interchangeable terms. They are not the same illness, and they should not be discussed as though they are.

Postpartum depression can involve persistent sadness, hopelessness, anxiety, exhaustion, guilt, difficulty bonding with a baby, changes in sleep and appetite, and thoughts of self-harm or suicide.

Postpartum psychosis is something else entirely.

It is a rare but extremely serious psychiatric emergency that can develop rapidly following childbirth. It can involve hallucinations, delusions, severe confusion, paranoia, mania, extreme agitation, rapidly changing mood and a loss of contact with reality. A woman experiencing postpartum psychosis may not recognise that she is unwell.

That distinction matters.

It matters enormously.

So I need some of you, particularly professionals who do not specialise in mental health, to pause before confidently giving your opinions on conditions you clearly have not taken the time to understand.

Sit down. Read the clinical guidance. Research postpartum psychosis properly. Understand what it is, how it can present, why it is an emergency and why it requires urgent psychiatric assessment and treatment.

Because having a professional title does not automatically make an opinion informed.

And what concerns me most is not simply the misinformation.

It is what sits underneath it.

The bias. The judgement. The stigma. The complete lack of empathy that women experiencing mental health difficulties are still expected to endure.

And mothers with young children often carry an additional burden.

The moment a woman becomes a mother, society can become incredibly quick to scrutinise her.

Is she coping?

Is she functioning?

Is she a good mother?

Is she safe around her children?

And sometimes, instead of asking “What is happening to this woman, and what support does she need?”, people immediately start asking what is wrong with her as a mother.

That is precisely why some women conceal how unwell they really are.

They are frightened.

Frightened of being labelled.

Frightened of being judged.

Frightened of being misunderstood.

Frightened that admitting they are struggling will be interpreted as evidence that they are incapable of caring for their children.

Frightened that asking for help will ultimately be used against them.

And when women have repeatedly experienced professionals dismissing their concerns, minimising their symptoms or failing to listen, why are we surprised when some women eventually stop speaking?

You cannot repeatedly tell people that their experiences are exaggerated, that they are overreacting, that they need to simply cope, or hand them a prescription without properly understanding what is happening around them, and then wonder why they stop asking for help.

Medication can be an important and necessary part of mental health treatment.

But a prescription is not a substitute for listening.

It is not a substitute for proper assessment.

It is not a substitute for follow-up.

It is not a substitute for understanding the person’s circumstances, vulnerabilities, support system and actual experience.

Women deserve to be treated as human beings, not as problems to be quickly managed.

And mothers deserve to be able to say:

“I am not okay.”

Without immediately being made to feel like they have failed as mothers.

As an advocate, I will continue to challenge this.

I will continue to challenge misinformation.

I will continue to challenge the casual language used around serious mental illness.
