Canadians, life feels harder than a decade ago. Per-person metrics have stagnated while costs rise. Private investment weakens under policy pressure. Here’s the data:
1/ Per-Capita Growth Stalled
Real GDP per capita grew just ~3.2% total from 2014–2024 (~0.4% annually) — near the bottom of advanced economies. The US grew >20%. Canada fell below the OECD average for the first time. Headline GDP looks better due to population growth, but your slice? Much smaller.
2/ Private Investment Collapsing
Business investment per worker has been weak/declining since ~2015. Capital per worker falling. $1T+ net capital outflow over the decade. Public/government spending and jobs grew faster. When private capital stops flowing, long-term growth suffers.
3/ Productivity Lagging
Labour productivity flat or weak for years — one of the OECD’s poorest performers. Far behind the US. This directly hits wages and living standards.
4/ Affordability Crisis
• Food inflation topped the G7 in periods (3.8%+).
• Housing: Massive price/rent surges; government buying unsold condos while young families can’t enter the market.
• Household debt ~180% of disposable income. Savings rate down.
5/ Healthcare Waits Exploded
Median wait from GP to treatment: 28.6 weeks in 2025 (2nd longest ever recorded) — over 200% longer than in 1993. System strained.
6/ Unkept Promises & Sector Warnings
Internal trade barriers remain despite $200B boost claims. Auto: “Without the US, no Canadian auto market” + Chinese EV risks. Energy: Carbon regs adding costs. Industries keep saying the same thing: policies are making Canada uncompetitive.
