Donald Trump stood in front of cameras this week and declared that Canada, a country whose most aggressive export is politeness, is a greater threat to the United States than Russia.

A Russian Telegram channel promptly announced that America is run by a dictator recruited in Soviet days, that the checks and balances turned out to be decorative, and that the transatlantic trust built since 1945 has been buried.

That is their claim, and I cannot prove it. What I can do is remember.

Through his entire first term Trump repeated “Russia hoax” with all the charm of a car alarm blaring at three in the morning. In Helsinki in 2018 he emerged from a private session with Putin looking like a man who had been humiliated, trampled on and sent out to thank his tormentor, and then told the world he trusted the Kremlin’s denial over his own intelligence agencies.

After an earlier meeting he confiscated his interpreter’s notes and ordered her silence. The Mueller report then documented a sweeping Russian operation and a long list of contacts between his people and Moscow.

Add it up. He has never said an unkind word about Russia and rarely a kind one about an ally. Moscow has always had one goal above all others, which is to remove America as a superpower, either with nuclear weapons or with a willing idiot in the Oval Office. Everything Trump does serves that ambition, and Putin wins without firing a shot.

With America’s checks and balances gone, Russia found this war easy to win.

Trump described Canada as a far greater enemy of the USA than Putin’s Russia.

It is time to say this openly:

– The USA is currently ruled by a dictator who was most likely recruited back in the days of the USSR.
– As it turns out, the American system of checks and balances does not actually exist in reality.
– The trust between Europe and the USA—which had existed since at least 1945—has been buried; if not forever, then certainly for a very long time.
