🍔 ERP systems are the fast food of the IT world

They look so simple, quick, and enticing but normally end up making their consumers less agile, poorer, and less able to compete.

🛑 I worked at one company that had so heavily customised their Enterprise ERP system during its implementation that upgrading it became a major exercise and financially prohibitive.

✋🏻 They were still on exactly the same version of the ERP system 12 years later when I joined. Their back end platform was effectively frozen in time and they had been forced to let 12 years of upgrades and innovation pass them by.

⇶⇶ While custom data fields/objects are essential and often necessary in ERP and CRM systems the key principle is to configure rather than code.

➪ If you run a global business with completely inconsistent and incoherent technology and business operations, then maybe, just maybe, implementing an ERP system, without customisation, is a good step forward.

► You are dancing with the devil when you install an Enterprise ERP system. Standardise your business processes to work with the software, rather then changing the software to work with all of the existing business processes.

I think that the role of CPO in a founder-driven company is the hardest role in modern business. Most founders don’t have the technical chops to micro-manage the CTO, but that isn’t the case for the CPO. Founders usually have a strong vision for the product, of course, so the CPO can implement the founder’s vision without conflict and eventually get fired for being expensive overhead (and “not adding enough value”) or they can try to put their stamp on the product, conflict with the founder, and eventually get fired for “not sharing the vision.”
