Unfortunately the subs also showed further evidence of Southgate struggling to understand balance in a starting XI. Brings on Watkins to add a runner to stretch the pitch (needed but would’ve preferred Gordon LW) but then takes off the two world class connectors in attack (Kane & Saka), leaves the other top connector on the bench (Palmer) and has no top passers on (Trent off, Wharton remains a sub). So how exactly are the runners meant to get the ball in dangerous areas ? Balance & dynamics are the key to everything.
