This is a similar dilemma to the problem of humanitarian aid. Should we continue to artificially prop up the languishing global south, short of re-colonizing them, no modicum of self-sufficiency will ever be obtained and their misery will continue into perpetuity at a steady pace.

We could, on the other hand, permit them to suffer with sufficient intensity that they would be compelled to look for strategies to mitigate their misery. How exactly are we to say that the former option contradicts human dignity while the latter violates it?

We can either grant migrants asylum into our nations, and they will continue to drown in dinghies on the Mediterranean in pursuit of our boundless charity; or we can deny them entry altogether, condemning them to remain in the countries of their birth—perhaps even to improve them.

One of the earliest ways we, as young children, learned to model patterns of behaviour was simply,

The subconscious loves to learn by visual example.

Whenever we are watching someone else, be it in real life, or digitally through media…

There is a significant portion of our brain that gets activated in acting out the same behaviour that we are observing.

When you watch someone dance, your brain (very subtly) activates those same muscles that you see the dancer using.

When you watch someone experience physical pain, we can often have a real sympathetic experience of that same injury. For example, with guys, we notice this when someone gets kicked in the nuts.

Etc
And the same goes for all the intangible qualities too, like personality traits. Beliefs. Ideas. Motives. Desires. Etc.
It’s crazy how much can be absorbed and downloaded via mere observation.

Couple this real neurological activity with the narrative and emotion of a movie? You have a potent device for installing new models into the subconscious mind. Especially when you consider that movies are hypnotic by nature, and place the audience in a state of relaxed focused attention, in which their subconscious becomes pliable and open to receiving new ideas…

This is why you can experience genuine perspective shifts, changes in behaviour and attitude, after “just” watching a movie.

Use this on purpose:
Bombard your brain with examples of behaviour you want to train.
