The picture is much more bleak in Scotland. Down from 12th in the world in 2000, to 28th. You couldn’t get a sharper contrast in how policy and strategy can make a huge impact on educational outcomes.

I regularly visit Dundee as it’s only a few miles away from where I live. I am very fond of the city. But its decline in recent years is absolutely horrendous. A once glorious city is now full of decay. Boarded up shops. Dirty streets and buildings. Derelict buildings. Pavements covered in weeds. Homeless everywhere. Litter everywhere. Parts of the city centre look hollowed out and completely run down in comparison to its former vibrant and bustling eras of the past. And it’s happening all over the UK.

Shame on the local councils who are clearly not bothering to use council tax money on the basic maintenance of civic pride and a failure in providing the opportunities for business and enterprise to flourish.

What was once vibrant and bustling city has been reduced to a ghost of its former self. This is not inevitable. It is the direct result of national and local governments that collect our tax money, yet treat the most basic duties of maintenance and civic pride as optional extras. They have failed to keep the streets clean, the buildings standing and the conditions alive in which enterprise can breathe. And Dundee is no isolated tragedy. The same high street decay is recognisable across the UK.

Shame on those who hold the power and the purse yet choose neglect over responsibility. A town or city does not decay by accident. It decays when those charged with its care simply stop doing their job properly.

Another backward step for our country.

Middle-aged men have been stripped of their right to PSA tests that help detect prostate cancer.

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in the UK, with around 63,000 diagnoses and 12,000 deaths annually & most men will have no symptoms.

Stopping these tests & having no screening process in place is a major mistake & a false economy.

@JimSpenceDundee Funnily enough my Sky broadband came to an end after 20 years with them. Put a few comparisons to them regarding deals at much better prices. Suffice to say they couldn’t care. Now with Virgin Media fibre broadband for £12 month cheaper and much better speeds!!
