The Rowing Voice, with updates from Row360, Telegraph & RV rowing correspondent Rachel Quarrell at live events. Out and about in the rowing world (UK & intl).
@gpetersmith@fatsculler And then Peter went on to win the next two in a row, 1993-1995. With the Olys starting to take LM2x and LM4- in 1996 all the lightweight events were mega competitive back then.
@gpetersmith@fatsculler The first race I watched in person at international rowing, walking along the stands after travel delays getting to finals weekend in Racice. Saw the accident to the right then he got the lead back right in front of me. Full race at https://t.co/2H0DAlTRvc
@fatsculler@BBCSport@RowingIreland@BritishRowing Here’s my long-ago warning - https://t.co/K8gKUitdNy.
We are now in the next stage I didn’t talk about then, since the Telegraph took rowing in the print edition for nearly 10 more years. Lack of any response means no rowing in any edition now, except human-interest bits. QED.
@fatsculler@BBCSport@RowingIreland@BritishRowing It is really simple. Those who support rowing and are interested in it, didn’t react to the existing coverage. Which is all the media outlets use now to measure what’s worth covering. If that’s the metric they use, audiences need to act or it disappears. As it has done.
@fatsculler@BBCSport@RowingIreland@BritishRowing Personal athlete stories have entirely replaced real race/result reporting. Which is unfair because rowing deserves to have both.
Lots of athlete/team/WorldRowing generated social media does not make up for lack of mainstream press interest.
@fatsculler@BBCSport@RowingIreland@BritishRowing Everyone who minds about this, complain.
I warned rowing many years ago that if reader/viewers don’t react both to lack of coverage and to positive increases in coverage, the sport would disappear from mainstream media.
It now has.
Simon van Dorp thinks he might be the first Dutch rower to gain two gold medals at the same world champs - I think he might well be the first male NED rower to do so. Any NED experts let me know if you disagree!
Been a bit busy in the mix zone, and soon going to the airport. But got to give massive credit to Simona Radis of Romania for getting THREE GOLDS in one week, two in Olympic events. And Adriana Adam of course, but Radis as stroke of all three was the one holding it all together.
Im going to call this the #BosbaanBump, a place for those without grandstand tickets to stand, see crews row past, feel closer to the raft action, watch medallists hug the families and still be able to see the big screen. Its worked out really well.
GBR scores on the doors ahead of the last finals session.
* means unbeaten entering the final and a ring round that means not beaten by anyone at the regatta.
GBR currently 5th in the medal table. USA lead it. GBR would be 4th on the Oly/Para only medal table.
The Bosbaan might get a few dry hours now to finish racing, looking at the radar weather maps. A weak sun's coming through the clouds for a while.
One good thing about this course, the soil's like sand, water disappears through it so quickly. No annoying clay-like mud.
