Balkans Waiting for Revolut: The Real Timeline After SEPA
Serbia will join the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA) in May 2026, while most neighbouring countries are already members.
Many people have been asking me when Revolut will launch in Serbia🇷🇸, Montenegro🇲🇪, Albania🇦🇱, North Macedonia🇲🇰, and other Balkan countries.
The short answer — I don't know, but here are some thoughts:
Revolut hasn't publicly announced any launch plans for these countries. There's no point in asking customer support — they won't give timelines.
To offer full services, Revolut prefers to obtain a local banking licence rather than operate only as a payment institution. They previously offered a limited cross-border Revolut Lite version in several Balkan countries (including Serbia and North Macedonia), but discontinued it globally in July 2024 to focus on full banking products.
They also tried cross-border services in Ukraine with a Lithuanian licence, but had to pull back due to local regulations. The smallest market where Revolut is seriously pursuing a banking licence is Switzerland, which differs significantly from the Balkan countries.
Revolut is prioritising bigger opportunities first, such as the US (where they recently applied for a banking charter), Turkey, UAE, India, LatAm, and other high-growth markets. They aim to enter 30+ new markets by 2030 as part of a major global push, and I believe some Balkan countries are on the list.
Balkan countries have relatively small populations, so they are probably not a high priority right now.
Most likely scenario:
Revolut will enter these markets after (or as) they join the EU, using licence passporting from Lithuania or another EU country.
Is Revolut thinking about the Balkans at all?
I think yes — they are clearly expanding aggressively worldwide, and with SEPA now rolling out, the technical barriers are disappearing. But don’t hold your breath for 2026. It could still be a few years away.
What can you do if you're waiting for Revolut?
Go to your app store and download the Revolut app, and try signing up. Most likely, you will be able to join the waitlist and will be at the front of the queue once service launches.
Also, the greater the waitlist, the stronger the signal Revolut will get about local demand; it could influence their plans, too.
What are your thoughts about Revolut in the Balkans? Are you waiting?
