People can criticize MBS. They can criticize Vision 2030, the cost of the giga-projects, execution, or individual decisions.
Fair enough.
But I think some criticism misses the scale of what Saudi Arabia is attempting.
I’m from Norway. 🇳🇴 Norway has the world’s largest sovereign wealth fund, the Government Pension Fund Global. Roughly 2.5 bigger than Saudi's PIF!
I’d actually like to see Norway use more of its enormous financial strength for strategic investments at home, particularly in future industries and infrastructure.
Saudi Arabia is doing exactly that, but with a much higher tolerance for risk.
Look at NEOM’s green hydrogen project.
This isn’t just another solar farm.
It is an attempt to build a world-scale renewable hydrogen supply chain, combining around 4 GW of solar and wind capacity with electrolysis, green ammonia production and export infrastructure.
The target is up to 600 tonnes of hydrogen a day, converted into green ammonia for international markets.
That is an enormous industrial experiment!
And when you try to industrialize technology at a scale that has never been built before, reality intervenes.
Timelines slip.
Costs change.
Engineering problems appear.
Markets move.
Assumptions prove wrong.
Saudi Arabia has already recalibrated parts of its giga-project strategy. Some timelines have moved, some projects have been redesigned, and greater emphasis has gone toward infrastructure and economically productive assets.
I don't automatically call that failure.
It is what happens when you try to turn an ambitious blueprint into concrete, steel, power plants, ports and functioning industries.
There is a legitimate debate about whether Saudi Arabia has sometimes moved too fast or taken risks that were too large.
But if you're trying to transform an oil-dependent economy, risk is unavoidable.
Some bets will fail.
Some will take longer.
Some will be abandoned.
Others may look very different in 20 years from what they look like today.
The same nuance is needed on Yemen.
The claim that the Saudi-led intervention was simply an unmitigated strategic failure is too simplistic.
Look at Hodeidah in 2018.
Saudi-backed Yemeni forces and the coalition had made significant advances around the port and were putting pressure on the Houthis' supply routes.
Then Western diplomatic pressure intensified dramatically.
The coalition halted the offensive as international efforts pushed for a ceasefire and negotiations, culminating in the Stockholm Agreement.
That doesn't prove Saudi Arabia would have won the war if the offensive had continued.
It doesn't prove Hodeidah would have ended the conflict.
But it does show why the history is more complicated than "Saudi Arabia intervened, failed and learned nothing."
Today, Riyadh is pursuing a different approach: strengthening the Yemeni government, trying to consolidate the anti-Houthi camp and securing Saudi Arabia's southern border.
The outcome is not predetermined.
But neither is the strategy static.
That is why I think patience matters when judging Saudi Arabia under MBS.
Transforming an oil-dependent economy, building new industries and reshaping the country's security architecture in less than two decades is an extraordinary undertaking.
There will be failures.
There will be delays.
There will be projects that never become what was originally promised.
The real question is what Saudi Arabia looks like in 2035, 2040 and 2050.
History is usually much less interested in whether every rendering was delivered on schedule than in what actually got built.
في سورة الأعراف قال الله تعالى عن ابليس ونسله من الجن والشياطين {إِنَّهُ يَرَاكُمْ هُوَ وَقَبِيلُهُ مِنْ حَيْثُ لَا تَرَوْنَهُمْ}
Shortcut through higher dimensions
Space and time reconstructed in 4D
Is this how higher dimensional beings see us - every moment at once?
Starting to understand what Vonnegut meant by humans being “great millipedes” - clearly it applies to our four legged friends too!
Geolocated 2d video → per frame 3d gaussians → each left precisely where & when it happened
Barbara Corcoran borrowed $1,000 from her boyfriend and opened a real estate office in New York. 20 years later she sold it for $66 million.
He was her partner for 7 years. Then he left her for her secretary.
She is 23 and waiting tables at the Fort Lee diner the night Ramone Simone walks up the concrete steps. Within a year he has moved her to Manhattan and handed her $1,000 to open a brokerage. He keeps 51%, she takes 49% and the title of managing partner.
7 years in they have 14 salespeople. One night she is draining pasta at his sink and he tells her he is marrying her secretary.
Then he says it. "You'll never succeed without me."
Corcoran has told fragments of this on television for years. This is the hour she gave to a room of mortgage brokers, no interviewer, nobody cutting away from her. She stands at a curtain and walks the whole thing through, the ugly parts included.
Watch the part where she explains what she mailed to the New York Times.
She had 11 sales that year. The entire year. She added them up, divided by 11, typed the answer on one page under a title she invented, and mailed it to every reporter in the paper with a byline.
Authority is not handed to anyone. It gets printed, and then people go looking for whoever printed it.
11 sales. One average. $58,432 on one page, and 5 days later the Times ran it as the price of Manhattan.
Everyone repeats this as a revenge story, because that is the part that travels. The mechanism is duller. She printed the little she had under a name that sounded official and let the paper make it true.
Nobody is short of numbers. Publishing them while the sample is still embarrassing is the part you will not do.
Sitting on your 11 sales until they turn into 200 feels like integrity. It is fear with better manners.
She credits the insult, and everyone repeats it back to her. The insult did not put her on the front page of the Times. 11 sales and a typewriter did.
Oksitosin = bağlanma hormonu.
Are you hiring massage therapists here?
Because honestly, I’d pay for the privilege of working here.
No other reason. I just want to serve the people. 😂
In 1991, Xerox had an office in Atlanta with a problem nobody could explain.
Their top salesperson was closing $4.2 million a year.
Their second best was doing $800,000.
Everyone else was under $400,000.
Same products. Same territory. Same commission structure. Same manager. Same everything.
The VP of sales flew down and spent three days shadowing the guy. Watched his calls. Sat in his meetings. Went through his pipeline.
He couldn't find it.
The man didn't seem to work more hours. Didn't seem sharper. His accounts weren't better than anyone else's.
Then he watched him walk into a meeting with a procurement director who had already said no. Twice.
He didn't open with a pitch. He didn't pull out a deck.
He sat down, opened a notebook, and said one sentence.
Before I show you anything, I want to understand what's actually slowing your team down.
Forty minutes later he walked out with a $340,000 deal.
The VP flew home and called Brian Tracy.
Tracy had spent 25 years studying exactly what that salesperson was doing. He had been in rooms where every person on straight commission was clearing a quarter million a year. Most were clearing over a million.
He interviewed all of them. Found every pattern. Spent thousands of hours on one question: what separates the top 10% from everyone else?
His answer wasn't what anyone expected.
80% of sales success is psychological. 20% is technical.
Most companies only train the 20%.
70% of companies do no sales training at all. They hand someone a brochure and a territory and say go figure it out.
The Atlanta salesperson wasn't more talented.
He had solved one problem that almost no salesperson ever solves.
He stopped thinking of himself as a salesperson.
Do customers like salespeople? No. Because a salesperson in their mind means someone who's about to pressure them into something they don't need with money they don't have.
Do customers like consultants? Every time. Because a consultant walks in with one goal: understand your problem and help you fix it.
Tracy says within 30 seconds of meeting someone, the customer already knows which one they're dealing with. There is no way to fake it. The way you see your own role determines how you walk into a room, how you ask questions, how you listen. The customer reads all of it before you say a word.
The best salespeople also think of themselves as doctors.
Doctors never skip steps. Examination. Diagnosis. Prescription. In that order. Every single time.
A doctor who prescribes before examining has committed malpractice.
A salesperson who presents before understanding has done the same thing. The customer just calls it a reason not to buy.
Tracy maps out the new model of selling as an upside-down triangle.
40% of the sale is trust-building. 30% is diagnosing the problem. 20% is presenting the solution. 10% is the close.
The old model had it flipped. Heavy on closing. That's exactly why it stopped working.
He asked thousands of customers across his career to describe their best salespeople in one word.
The top answer — across every industry, every country, every product category — was the same.
Nice.
Not smart. Not aggressive. Not persuasive. Nice.
When he pushed them to define it they said things like easy to talk to, positive, I trust them, I feel good when they come in.
Tracy says everything you do with a customer either adds to that feeling or takes from it.
Nothing is neutral. Everything counts.
The Atlanta salesperson retired at 51.
The VP who flew down said the $40,000 he spent on Tracy was the best money the company ever put into anything.
The seminar is free on YouTube. Just over an hour. Almost nobody outside of professional sales has watched it as a complete explanation of why two people in the same office, with the same product, selling into the same market, end up in completely different income brackets for the rest of their careers.
