Liverpool already possess a midfield capable of operating in a PSG-style structure. Dominik Szoboszlai, Alexis Mac Allister and Ryan Gravenberch have the technical quality, energy and progressive ability to function as a midfield three in a straight line rather than a rigid double pivot.

1. All three are natural progressive midfielders

None of them is a pure defensive midfielder. Each prefers to step forward, carry the ball and influence play higher up the pitch. Forcing two of them into a deep double pivot wastes their strengths and leaves the side short of creativity between the lines.

2. A straight-line midfield maximises their qualities

Playing Szoboszlai, Mac Allister and Gravenberch as a midfield three allows them to share defensive responsibilities while maintaining constant presence in advanced areas. This structure mirrors successful PSG setups that prioritise fluid, technical midfielders over a fixed holding pair.

3. Double pivot restricts rather than protects

A double pivot would push two of these players deeper than their best positions. It reduces their ability to arrive in the box, switch play, or support the attack. The result is a safer-looking shape on paper but a less dangerous team in practice.

4. Control comes from quality, not just numbers

These three can dominate matches through technical security and intelligent movement. A straight midfield line gives them the platform to do that while still offering enough defensive cover when organised correctly.
Liverpool do not need to force a double pivot.

They already have the profiles for a fluid, progressive midfield three.
