Steve Blackman's wrestling career is one of the biggest "what if" stories of WWE's Attitude Era. Before he ever became a WWE star, he had actually signed with the company in the late 1980s after impressing officials with his legitimate martial arts skills. Unfortunately, his career was put on hold when he contracted malaria and dysentery while traveling overseas. The illnesses were so severe that they left him unable to wrestle for years, and WWF released him while he was still recovering.
After making a full recovery, Blackman worked his way back into wrestling and returned to WWF in 1997 under the nickname "The Lethal Weapon." His serious, no-nonsense persona was a perfect fit for his real-life martial arts background. Unlike many larger-than-life characters of the Attitude Era, Blackman was presented as a quiet, dangerous competitor who let his actions do the talking. He became famous for carrying kendo sticks and nunchaku and built a reputation as one of the toughest men on the roster.
Although he never reached the main-event scene, Blackman carved out a successful career in the mid-card, particularly in the Hardcore division. He won the Hardcore Championship six times and was involved in several memorable feuds. One of his most iconic moments came at SummerSlam 2000 when he battled Shane McMahon. The match ended with Blackman striking Shane with a kendo stick while they were high above the arena, sending Shane crashing from the TitanTron onto a crash pad below—a stunt that remains one of the most memorable moments of the Attitude Era.
By 2001 and 2002, years of wrestling and his physical style had taken a toll on his body. Persistent neck and shoulder injuries made it increasingly difficult to continue competing, and he chose to retire from full-time wrestling in 2002. His departure wasn't the result of backstage issues or creative disagreements; it was largely a decision based on his long-term health.
After leaving WWE, Blackman returned to his passion for martial arts by teaching self-defense and operating his own training school. He also became a licensed bail bondsman, a career that surprised many fans but suited his disciplined and no-nonsense personality.
Due to several first match-losses at local and worldwide tournaments the Kazama Dojo has no disciples.
‘Nothing drums up business like a beautiful woman.’ That’s something she overheard on the subway so maybe it’s time to test that theory.
Smiling though the embarrassment.
