En el año 1000 a.C., el rey Saúl estableció la monarquía israelita, que más tarde se dividió en el Reino de Israel y el Reino de Judá. La conquista del Imperio Romano en el año 63 a.C. dio el nombre de "Palestina" a Judá.

Durante este tiempo, el cristianismo se convirtió en una religión dominante hacia el final del Imperio Romano. En 636 se produjo una conquista árabe que inició la expansión del Islam.

La región bajo control de Gran Bretaña era lo que llamó el mandato británico para Palestina. En 1947, la ONU dividió Palestina en dos estados independientes: un estado judío y un estado árabe, y la ciudad de Jerusalén se convirtió en una zona internacional con un estatus especial. Menos de un año después, Israel se declaró Estado independiente.

Inmediatamente después de la declaración, estalló la guerra árabe-israelí de 1948 y terminó cuando se alcanzó un acuerdo de alto el fuego en 1949, entregando más de dos tercios de la Palestina histórica, incluida Jerusalén Occidental, a Israel.

Hubo más guerras y enfrentamientos en las décadas siguientes, a saber, la Guerra de los Seis Días que terminó con la victoria de Israel, la invasión israelí del Líbano en 1982 que expulsó a la Organización de Liberación Palestina de Beirut, la Primera Intifada que terminó con los Acuerdos de Oslo, la Segunda Intifada termina con la retirada de Israel de Gaza.
