As the Ottoman Turks breached the walls of Constantinople, the last Roman Emperor, Constantine XI Dragases Palaiologos gave his soldiers the opportunity to flee.
The Emperor then removed his imperial regalia, delivered one of the greatest speeches of all time to rally his remaining troops, and died in combat defending his capital.
His body was never found.
