Today is the 4th anniversary of the death of Kazuki Takahashi. He was the Manga artist who created Yu-Gi-Oh! He died trying to save three swimmers from a rip current while he was snorkeling. His body was found on July 6th.

Good.

Because that is true.

Every generation gets its mythology. Boomers had Westerns. Gen X had grimy dystopian ‘80s movies. Millennials got superheroes, shared universes, chosen ones, multiverse homework, and third-act CG army battle slop.

That IS our THING.

And we love that shit.

Superheroes gave millennials spectacle, sincerity, trauma, destiny, and the fantasy that one good person could still punch the world back into shape.

Gen Z is not built for that myth.

Their genre is internet horror. Creepypasta. Analog nightmares. Liminal spaces. Wishes gone wrong. Stories where the system is broken before the movie even starts and nobody is coming to save you.

That speaks to their anxiety. Jobs are cooked. Housing is cooked. Dating is cooked. The future feels like a terms-of-service agreement nobody read before clicking accept.

So yeah, superheroes belong to millennials.

That does not mean younger people cannot enjoy them. It means capes are not their native language.

Hollywood can keep calling it superhero fatigue all it wants.

The audience just wants other things.
