Keith is wrong. If he is not, I will gladly admit it.
Danielle Smith is prepared to appeal the decision on the Alberta independence referendum and is prepared to take years to do it.
In that time Alberta will be flooded with hundreds of thousands of new citizens Mark Carney and the Liberals will hand pick, from around the world. Stacking the deck against independence.
Being fully aware of what is going on, is critical.
Smith's argument is that this ruling will impact how Alberta is governed, so any appeal will be lengthy, by design.
She will slow walk this for years to ensure independence never happens. That is a fact.
Anyone who thinks she won't, is not paying attention.
Michael, congratulations on launching your new pro-Ottawa group. Now, Albertans need more than intentions. What’s your concrete plan to ensure fairness for Alberta when Ottawa keeps ignoring us? We’ll be waiting to see the goods—Alberta deserves real results.
In time, you will come to realize that independence is the only viable path forward.
708,000 Albertans signed a petition to have a binary vote on whether Alberta is to remain part of Canada or not.
This is not a binary vote. It’s Danielle dealing from the bottom of the deck and screwing her party base yet again. Floor crossing, 10,000,000 Alberta population goal, double dealing on amending the Bill of Rights, lying about a provincial firearms license, selling us out to Carney in her idiotic MOU and now stabbing 708,000 Albertans in the back by denying them a binary choice on independence.
Danielle Smith looked Albertans in the eye and lied to them about the courts not allowing her to call the question under s. 1 of the Referendum Act. Both Justices decisions were limited to the Citizens Initiative Act and said that Premier Smith could legally call the question under that statute.
@jkenney Ottawa is tearing the country you're so proud of apart. Albertan's ARE hard working, innovative and loyal people... we're also smart enough to know we didn't leave Canada... it left us. So... we're going to make the leaving permanent.
Bullsh*t.
Mitch Sylvestre invited 48 chiefs in Alberta to a meeting in Panoka. Sat there all day & not a single one showed up.
We had very public and open town halls meetings for 2 years all across Alberta...
First Nations had every opportunity to join in, but their leadership never did.
There is so much discussion happening right now about the Alberta independence referendum and the question itself, with countless current and former elected officials weighing in. But honestly, I do not really care what they have to say. I care what the people have to say. That is the entire point of a referendum and the Citizens Initiative Act, to give a voice directly to the people.
Current and former elected officials have already had, or still have, the opportunity to make decisions on behalf of Albertans. The people only have their voices. So when politicians spend their time trying to drown out those voices, I lose interest in what they have to say. I do not want politicians telling me what to think or what to do. They are public servants, and their responsibility is to listen to the people. If they are not listening to the people, then who exactly are they listening to?
And for those saying that Quebec’s political parties ran on separation, let me remind you of the very purpose of the Citizen Initiative Act.
In Alberta, the government itself enacted the Citizen Initiative Act specifically to give citizens a voice and provide direction to government. More than 700,000 Albertans signed in support of holding a referendum on independence, giving the government a clear democratic mandate to address the issue using the tool the government created!
Yesterday’s announcement effectively sets all of those efforts aside and places the issue back in the hands of the government and the courts, despite citizens having already engaged in the democratic process the government itself created.
The government cannot have it both ways: create and encourage citizens to use a democratic process, and then refuse to honour the results when citizens actually participate.
Conduct like this is precisely what causes people to lose trust in public institutions and in the democratic process itself.
I personally want to hear more from citizens, and I would encourage more referendums, not less. That is how we should be moving forward — not backward.
🚨 BREAKING NEWS -
The recent Justice Shaina Leonard in Alberta saying that Government of Alberta must “consult” with First Nations prior to the Chief Electoral Officer approving a petition on Independence means that if it isn’t overturned on appeal Alberta will become ungovernable.
The Chiefs are now saying that even a question to have a question on independence requires consultation.
In effect you can’t consult with Albertans by way of petition or have an Election in Alberta without first “consulting” with the Chiefs of Alberta.
The decision flows from mere assertion of “a treaty relationship”, a lack of “consultation” which according to Justice Leonard gives rise to “irreparable harm”.
Governments make millions of decisions every year without “consultation” with First Nations. Every one of these decisions is now subject to injunctions.
So those of us who stood outside in the cold to collect signatures and got harassed by crazies to exercise our democratic rights as citizens means pretty much nothing to the UCP government.
This is a clear sign that no matter what political persuasion you are in Alberta you are considered a tenant farmer, working for the bureaucracy. Let that sink in.
Fucking bullshit @UCPCaucus@Alberta_UCP a referendum to have a referendum… we have no firewall, we have a Premier who is taking advice from Carney and the Ottawa Liberal Elite…
I’m fucking pissed!!

We get to vote on a vote. She isn't sitting on the fence, she is the fence. When would we actually get to vote for independence... 2027? Not a chance with an election coming.
The court did not stop the province from calling the question. The courts ruling is limited to whether a citizen can initiate the question.
The power of the province to call it was never in question, hence my first comment.
If Quebec can do it, why can’t Alberta? The answer is: it can.
And in any event, clearly all of this has confused the issue, and I do not think that strengthens public trust and confidence in our democratic processes.
Danielle Smith is OVER, she’s a FAILURE and the sooner we remove her and get a real premier in there the better. Fuck you Danielle you haven’t learned a thing since YOU crossed the floor 12 years ago. You’re a fucking idiot and have to go, all you do is sellout Albertans
He is missing the forest for the trees here. Whether you or I personally agree with the topic of separation is entirely beside the point.
Referendums aren't a "distraction", they are a core democratic right. Suggesting that the province should block Albertans from having a direct say on major constitutional and economic questions is what’s truly concerning. Letting the people vote isn't virtue signalling; it’s the very foundation of our democracy.
Let's trust the voters to make their own choice instead of trying to silence the conversation before it even starts. Let the people speak.
🇨🇦 THE STANLEY CUP PLAY OOFS 🇨🇦
Good evening, everybody, and welcome back to tonight's game. We're in the 121st period of Alberta's time in Confederation.
The score is Quebec TWO, Alberta NO SCORE.
Alberta hasn't registered a shot on net since 1965...Not one.
You know Bob, it's really hard to explain. Alberta's got some of the best players in the league -- big, strong, hard-working guys -- yet they just can't seem to generate anything, and of course Quebec always plays so well on home ice, don't they?
It's baffling, Howie. They've got the talent, they've got the resources, but every time they challenge a call, it goes straight to the Situation Room in Ottawa -- and they instantly confirm the call on the ice.
It's like the rules of the game are working against them. You almost have to wonder... is this game actually rigged from...
(cuts to commercial)
We're back, and nothing has changed. Still no shots on net for Alberta... and the Situation Room just waved off another one.
Time to send out a goon to drop the gloves, Bob. I don't see another way. Something has to happen here...
