"we feel the ocean and earth, the power of plants and animals, the majesty of Eritrea; we feel the thrum of the vibrant cities of Massawa and Asmara. Time passes, stories risk fading, but the translation of this book saves a portion of history that deserves to be shared."

I am beaming that I can finally announce that my translation of Juliana Leite's "My Good Friend" (published in @parisreview) is one of this year's O. Henry Prize winners, selected by @amortowles! https://t.co/6CNxUBF7uY
Reminder that, while many small presses do good and important work, small isn’t necessarily synonymous with ethical, or better treatment for workers/translators, or really better practice in any way!
It is inspiring to see so many authors and translators withdraw their work, pledge their prize money, or make a statement in solidarity—and *infuriating* that they should have to do so instead of rightfully celebrating, and being celebrated for, their accomplishments @PENamerica
