Illinois Democratic Sen. Tammy Duckworth says her recent outing to watch ‘Barbie’ with her daughters turned into a disappointing and exclusionary experience.

Like many filmgoers, Duckworth and her daughters donned pink outfits, with the girls in sparkly shoes, and headed to an unnamed theater to catch the movie.

However, the family's excitement quickly turned to frustration when they discovered that the theater's only elevator was out of order. Duckworth, who lost both her legs in 2004 while serving in Iraq prior to her political career, said she checked beforehand to ensure that the Illinois movie theater was wheelchair-accessible. Due to the elevator issue, she was unable to join her daughters inside and had to wait outside.

‘I missed out on an experience with my girls,’ Duckworth told Politico. ‘I’m pretty tough about these things. But this one really was a little bit of a stab to my soul.’

Duckworth chose not to reveal the theater's name, as her kids live nearby. This incident highlights the barriers that millions of disabled Americans face. Despite the Americans with Disabilities Act being in effect for 33 years, accessibility remains a significant problem in American life.

‘It’s past time we make sure accessibility is the default in America—not an afterthought,’ Duckworth wrote in a July 26 statement.
