“When a student develops self-compassion, the seat of motivation shifts.  Since internal value doesn’t depend on external achievement, it frees students up to experiment, take risks and try new paths.”

[MindShift @MindShiftKQED]

"Self-compassion leads to learning goals instead of performance goals — such as trying again after messing up. It’s a better academic motivator than self-criticism. It’s a motivation of care instead of a motivation of fear," says Dr. Kristin Neff https://t.co/ThSdEYnUwj

So helpful in our understanding of ourselves and our students! Also helpful in thinking about the importance of restoration and repair where/when possible.

I listened to Just Mercy narrated by the author, Bryan Steveson. I accidentally downloaded the young adults version. It was excellent. Didn’t realize it was YA until it was over, and it said so. I highly recommend it especially for our young adult students! @eji_org

My four year old son watching me wash my hands. You didn’t wash long enough mom, there are still germs”. So I pump more soap and wash longer. I ask him how I did. He looks at me sternly, “one pump of soap mom, you only use one pump!” #seinfeldepisode

How about this same sentiment in our schools? What would it look like?

The DuVernay Test — coined by critic @ManohlaDargis and inspired by the work of filmmaker Ava DuVernay — asks a simple question: Do the Black characters in this story “have fully realized lives rather than serve as scenery in white stories"

This struck such a cord. Profound way to look at this current moment we live in.

"They straightened out the Mississippi River in places, to make room for houses and liveable acreage. Occasionally the river floods these places. 'Floods' is the word they use, but in fact it is not flooding; it is remembering. Remembering where it used to be."
