Why is it called “Eritrea” clawed frog?
Because it was first scientifically described in Eritrea 🇪🇷
📍 For the first time discovered from Saganeiti and Adi Caié
👨‍🔬 Described in 1898 by Italian herpetologist Michele Geremia Peracca
👉 Even though it lives across East Africa today, its name remains linked to where it was first discovered - Eritrea.

🐢 The Hidden Turtle of Eritrea’s Waters

Quiet, resilient, and ancient — the Eritrean side-neck turtle (Pelomedusa gehafie) is one of the most fascinating freshwater species found in the Horn of Africa. It was first described in 1835 by a German naturalist Eduard Rüppell at river called Damas near Gindhae.

This remarkable and endemic turtle lives in seasonal rivers, ponds, wetlands, and even temporary rain pools across Eritrea’s diverse landscapes. Unlike many animals that struggle during long dry seasons, this turtle has an incredible survival strategy: when water disappears, it can bury itself in mud and enter a resting state until the rains return. Months later, it emerges again as if nothing happened — a true master of survival in harsh environments.

Side-neck turtles get their name from the unique way they bend their neck sideways under their shell instead of pulling it straight back like most turtles. This ancient lineage has existed for millions of years and continues to play an important role in freshwater ecosystems by helping maintain ecological balance as both scavenger and predator.

Despite its quiet presence, the Eritrean side-neck turtle represents something special — a piece of Africa’s natural heritage that has adapted to survive in one of the world’s most challenging climates. Protecting freshwater habitats means protecting species like this one, whose story is still being discovered.

Sometimes the most extraordinary wildlife lives not in famous parks, but in small seasonal ponds and hidden wetlands — waiting patiently beneath the surface.

In the 1960s, the Expo was known for its historical exhibitions that showcased Eritrea's beauty, trade, and innovation. It was also notable for hosting the Miss Eritrea pageant's premiere. The building featured in the images houses the famous Melotti, known as Asmara Beer, one of the first beers produced in Africa. However, after 1975, when the Derg regime under Mengistu Haile Mariam came to power, the Expo was transformed into one of the largest prisons for Eritreans until the country gained independence. Condolences: Veteran freedom fighter and Governor of Zoba Maekel, Btsai Fissehaie Haile (Afro), has passed away at the age of 78 due to illness.

Btsai Fissehaie joined the EPLF in July 1973 after serving as a member of the agitational/clandestine "Tihisha" group for a year from 1972 until 1973.

During the subsequent two decades of national liberation struggle, he served his nation and people with utmost dedication in various capacities including as a combatant in the EPLA; the EPLF Department of People's Administration; and in the Department of Intelligence and Security.

After independence, Btsai Fissehaie continued to render outstanding service to his people and nation as Deputy Governor of Asmara; Executive Director in the Northern Red Sea Region; Director General of the Department of Customs in the Ministry of Finance; Director-General of the Department of Civil Aviation; as well as Governor of Gash Barka and Central Regions respectively.
