Somalia is a member of the Arab League, and this has led many Arabs and even some Africans to confuse politics with national identity.

Somalis are not Arabs. Around 90 percent of the Somali population is ethnically Somali and speaks only the Somali language. Arabic is considered a second language in the country due to Arab League membership, but in reality it is not spoken by the general population.

Somalis also carry older genetic lineages than Arabs, who are considered later populations, and this is well documented.

Are there clans of Arab origin? Yes, but they do not exceed 1 percent of the population. These are people who migrated to Somalia, were welcomed, and are considered Somali today.

I hope Arabs stop promoting this myth because it creates hostility between us and the rest of the African continent. I also hope Africans understand that Somalia’s alignment with the Arab world is political and geographic, and also rooted in shared religion.

And remember that Somalia has always taken pride in its African identity, and was one of the most active countries in fighting for the liberation of African lands from European colonialism and strongly embraced Pan-Africanism.
