Filipino Army soldiers in a firefight with ISIS during the Battle of Marawi, May 2017....
The Battle of Marawi began on May 23, 2017, after Philippine security forces attempted to capture Isnilon Hapilon, the leader of ISIS's affiliate in Southeast Asia. Militants from the Maute Group and Abu Sayyaf seized large sections of Marawi City on the southern island of Mindanao, raising the ISIS flag over government buildings and taking hundreds of civilians hostage.
The battle lasted 154 days, making it the longest and most destructive urban conflict in modern Philippine history. More than 1,200 people were killed, including over 900 militants, 168 government troops, and at least 87 civilians. Nearly 400,000 residents were displaced as artillery, airstrikes, and street-by-street fighting reduced much of the city center to rubble.
The Philippine Armed Forces, supported by intelligence and surveillance assistance from the United States and Australia, gradually regained control. On October 23, 2017, the government officially declared Marawi liberated after the deaths of Hapilon and Maute leader Omar Maute.
During the battle, ISIS fighters used commercial drones for reconnaissance and propaganda, marking one of the first major instances in Southeast Asia of terrorist groups employing drones in urban warfare, a tactic that has since become increasingly common in conflicts around the world.
