@mangelined1@willcourtney13@ElyzaNikole_ The crazy thing is that even people in the church see what the church does to people. In the circle of greed, Dante remarks that it is loaded with priests and cardinals. I think it’s all about money at the end of the day #ch1002#divc0m
@medievalsarah It gets more fascinating the further into the book. It becomes less about physical pain and more about the implications of what is going on #divc0m#ch1002
@Gilga_Matt @AncientHolly201 I think the most important think when reading these kinds of works is to find those inconsistencies that you mention #divc0m#ch1002
@Gilga_Matt @AncientHolly201 I think a lot of what you said is still relevant today. People want to be immortalized in some way, whether that be fame, a legacy, or belief in the afterlife #divc0m#ch1002
@quinten04591584 I think a lot of this has to do with him providing a much more vivid interpretation than others, so it kind of stuck throughout history #ch1002#divc0m
“As a man, who rejoicing in his gains, suddenly seeing his gain turn into loss, will grieve as he compares his then and now”
Man, this is a timeless aspect of so many parts of life. The stock market comes to mind #divc0m#ch1002
@Ccasielloch1208 It just seems like he had no desires in portraying anything other than what actually happened. It’s fascinating compared to a lot of medieval texts #ch1002#mrcopolo
@RPch201 @PriessNicolina I totally forgot about the wile descriptions in mandeville’s travels, and now some of my other responses are completely wrong. Marco polo’s travels now do appear much more believable. #mrcopolo
@PriessNicolina I think they both seem credible, but have wildly different writing styles. Marco Polo told a story and discussed interactions, where mandeville had a very dry description. This could also be a translation issue #ch1002#mrcopolo
@sjaellas I know everyone else has probably already said it, but it seems like this is more about telling a story then just cataloguing what was seen #ch1002#mrcopolo
“The land of Jerusalem has been in many different people’s hands-Jews, caananites, Assyrians, Persians, medians, Macedonians, Greeks, romans, Christians, saracens, barbarians, and many other nations” it’s crazy how one small area can change hands so many times #mand3v1ll3#ch1002
“And that is ill done. For in order to get offering they say that it is the cross if our lord Jesus Christ” good to know that church donation getting practices have always been manipulative #mand3v1ll3#ch1002
@JacobBayley2 I agree with you on the organization. It seems very thoughtful in terms of how it is put together, regardless of the message sent or cultural implications #ch1002#islmtrvl
@GabbyBrito2 I would assume that all of the information in parenthesis wouldn’t be there if it was original. A lot of old text really doesn’t translate well. The next class piece from Dante has the same issue #ch1002#islmtrvl
@Gilga_Matt @AncientHolly201 There was a lot of backwards stuff in this reading, but then again, pretty much every piece we’ve had in this class shows a lot of old society flaws #islmtrvl#ch1002
So far, I can tell that this at least has to do with spreading Islam, traveling, and that’s about it. I feel like I am definitely missing some of the point. I hope discussion clears it up today. #islmtrvl#ch1002
At the start of Abu Hamid, I cant help that think the island of snakes that do not harm anyone is a metaphor. I am not sure what it is trying to say about the underlying culture. #islmtrvl#ch1002
