Former Botswana president Seretse Ian Khama has criticised moves in Zimbabwe to extend presidential term limits, alleging that constitutional changes are being driven by electoral manipulation and financial inducements to keep leaders in power.

In a Facebook post, Khama said Zimbabwe had joined a growing list of African countries where presidents seek to prolong their rule by altering constitutions. He cited Cameroon’s Paul Biya, Uganda’s Yoweri Museveni and Rwanda’s Paul Kagame as examples.

Khama also accused what he described as authoritarian regimes of relying on political assassinations, fabricated charges, detentions, kidnappings and enforced disappearances, pointing to recent incidents in Tanzania and Uganda.

Referring to Zimbabwe’s history, he said the country and its people had endured oppression from the era of Gukurahundi to the present day. He recalled telling opposition politician Job Sikhala during the launch of his book Footprints in the Chains that, in his view, the only changes since the days of Rhodesia and Ian Smith were the country’s name and the identities of its leaders, adding that “oppressors come in all colours.”

What is LOST is Real IMPACTFUL STORIES that are left in Silence because these women are not as LOUD. Natalia Goagoses was once a Chief Regional Officer of Erongo region. She got CLEAN AUDITS from the Auditor General, something many regional Councils struggle with to date. When she became Governor of Erongo, she found that the Office of the Governor was located in a HOTEL and government ostensibly paid more than N$ 100 000 per month for this Hotel located Governor office. She MOVED the Office OUT of the HOTEL and went to an old Government building that she is renovating from donations. Finance Minister Erica Shafudah is another. The Fiscal reforms we wanted for years as activists she has implemented. She Passed Regulations to stop Banks from being controlled and dominated by Foreigners. Banks Boards and Executive must now be 70% Namibian. She passed regulations on Building Societies and ended Corrupt financial management deals. We will now have GOLD as part our RESERVES and very soon we won’t have to pay for it. She also LISTENS and we may get, although not there yet, a Real SHIFT from a Neoliberal Capitalist Fiscal Orientation to Radical Fiscal transformation. I am [name redacted], Angolan to the core, born in Huíla Province, in the municipality of Lubango, and I live near the SWAPO Cemetery 🪦.

Speaking about these Angolan children who wander around Namibian cities and towns begging for money, I have the following to inform:

These children are from the "Ovamuila" ethnic group, and they live in Huíla Province, in the municipality of Humpata (MPHATA), in the locality of Bata-Bata (Mbata Vata). This population is rich in cattle and goats, and has a lot of cereals. They are not poor, they are rich. But they are very greedy.
They don’t like to spend their wealth often, they prefer to send their children to the streets of certain cities to beg for money, and in the end they accumulate large sums of money from begging.

Here in Huíla Province, at all tourist sites, bakeries, supermarkets, and ATMs, the presence of these children is constant. They are irritating, they don’t let tourists enjoy their outings in peace. They are always asking. The city of Lubango where I work is currently rounding them all up and sending them to a shelter, but the parents then show up and take them out of there, and send them to Namibia. They target tourist spots in the city, their presence is still noticeable.

They are people who reject school education. In the areas where they live, the schools are abandoned and empty because they don’t want to study.

I’m not saying this out of emotion, I’m saying it because it is the reality. Therefore, you Namibians, if you continue giving money to these children, you will be encouraging them to keep up this practice. Never try to adopt them, because that is not the main focus of their parents. The parents’ main objective is for them to beg for money and then hand the money over to their parents. Whoever tries to adopt them will regret it. Because this is a very complicated tribe.
