@USMNT post-mortem: the Flo un-suspension was 100% the reason we lost to Belgium. The red card was a rallying moment, as Seedorf notes. It was a grave injustice, fueling cohesion. All of the belief and irrational confidence (both extremely fragile) disappeared on that decision
@NBA halftime needs extension by 5 minutes. Can’t leave your seats to use the bathroom, walk to the corner store etc without missing half the 3rd quarter. @NHL 20 minutes between periods is the ideal model
@UCLAMBB tournament thoughts
- Teams ceiling fully healthy is final4
- Dailey Jr & Dent play well, we move on
- The dev of our 7-9 players (Freeny, Williams, Jamerson) was unexpected & gives us depth
- If we get past UCF, Tarris Reed might destroy us given lack of frontcourt size
This is the most pathetic play AND the stupidest call I have ever seen, all wrapped into one
Clean out the coaching staff, fire the athletic director (into the sun), lysol the football ops, and start over immediately
I was at jam-packed Kinnick Stadium for Oregon/Iowa. The weather was abysmal. Forties & raining 🌧️ all day. Atmosphere was superb—it’s like that all over the Big Ten
@UCLAFootball & its incompetent AD Jarmond have no idea what they’re doing moving to SoFi Stadium. Idiotic doesn’t begin to describe it. They’re going to be like Minnesota at the Metrodome—an untouchable
The Big Ten is going to destroy UCLA FB—the competition will flat-out take every great player in the footprint. Top coaches will reject the job or leave quickly w/success
If you’re a quality HS FB player are you going to play at:
The Coliseum
Autzen Stadium
Husky Stadium
The Big House
The Horseshoe
Beaver Stadium
Kinnick Stadium
Camp Randall
Spartan Stadium, etc.
— or go play at a sterile corporate NFL dump in Inglewood? The atmosphere there will be so bad it’s indescribable. And fans cannot tailgate—why even show up? What about this is college football?
What visiting fans are flying out to see a game at SoFi?
I can’t recommend UCLA FB to anybody. They may be trying to destroy the program, who knows, but the downward trajectory continues
UCLA game #1 takeaways
1) Donovan Dent is special
2) Backcourt and SF length is missing. Going to need to consistently outscore teams to win
3) Really feeling Aday Mara’s absence. How did we let him go?
Never watch the Ryder Cup intently because it’s always competing with a great weekend of football. Petition to move it to a dead sports weekend in August. Would also be great for the Euros who vacation that month @rydercup@RyderCupUSA@PGATOUR@PGA
@MaxBrowne4 UCLA either led or was top 3 in pac-12 attendance in 2011-2013. The hour long drive is easy when the product is good. Rose bowl tailgating >>> sitting in a parking lot in Inglewood. SoFi still a massive stadium that would look empty without fan support
(2/2) Honorable mentions:
- Courtney’s Produce (handmade daily pb&j sandwich’s)
- Nari (incredible elevated Thai)
- Robin (best omakase in the city)
- Tin (so close to making the top 10. Best Vietnamese food in the city. Incredible chicken and rice plates)
- Sotto Mare (order the oysters and cioppino or lobster ravioli. SF classic)
- Scomas (best restaurant near fishermen’s worth. Really close to cracking the top 10 - so so good)
- Alimento (best gelato in the city)
- Loquat (best coffee and pastries in the city)
- Ted’s Deli (our favorite deli. Really good bread and sandwiches)
- Statebird provisions (super unique experience, dim sum style new American. Incredible quality and flavors)
- Swan Oyster depot (be prepared to wait in line for an hour or two. It’s worth it. Get the off the menu sashimi)
- La Connessa (beautiful setting and great food to match. Some of the best modern Italian in the city)
- The Palm Court at RH (take your parents here when they come visit town for lunch. It’s a gorgeous setting with amazing food to match)
- Dalida (rivals kitchen Istanbul. Go here and then go bowling at Presidio Bowl after. Super fun night)
- Octavia (Have the restaurant order for you, sit back, and enjoy the experience)
- Bar Sprezzatura (food is eh but the ambiance and cocktails are A+)
- Mister Jiu’s (sit at the bar, where you can order a la carte. It’s the best high end chinese in the city)
- Linden Room (the best neighborhood cocktail bar in the city)
- Mama’s Luncheonette (according to Kelly, it’s the best chicken Cesar wrap she’s ever had)
- Left Door (phenomenal cocktails. Blue cheese olives are outstanding)
- Chez Maman (totally affordable high quality french food)
(1/2) After spending 2yrs in San Francico, myself and @kellyy_roache ate at a lot of really good restaurants. Here’s a guide of our top 10 favorite (in no particular order):
1) Elena’s (West Portal). Jk about the “no particular order” part. This is the best restaurant in SF. Probably some of the best high end mexican in the country. Skip the mission burrito spots and instead sit at the bar here and order a cadillac frozen marg and steak fajitas (plus a chicken quesadilla and/or esquites, and/or empanadas for the table. You can’t go wrong)
2) Domo (Hayes Valley). There are so many esteemed omakase places in the city, which are all good and fine, but the quality to price ratio at Domo is off the charts. Incredible cuts of fish that won’t drain your bank account. Get the crab and shrimp tempura hand roll, the real crab california rol and the chu-toro nigiri
3) Kitchen Istanbul (Inner Richmond). This is a restaurant that will reorient your worldview on what good mediterranean food should taste like. Incredible dishes up and down the menu. Order a bottle (or two) of wine and get the Adana Kebaps
4) Original Joe’s (North Beach). There are other locations, but this is the one you want to go to for the full experience. If you can’t get a reservation, just grab a crisp martini and wait around in the bar until a walk in table opens up (it’s like the hunger games). Get any of the veal items, the crab cocktail, and the spicy rigatoni
5) Hillstone (North Beach). It’s a chain but so what. It’s one of the best restaurants in the city. The entire menu is good. Get the Houston’s Grilled chicken salad (hold the chicken) for an app and either the crispy chicken sandwich, french dip or crab cakes for an entree (plus a side of fries and coleslaw of course)
6) Zuni Café (Hayes Valley). People keep saying that Zuni is overrated. But those people are idiots. I’m almost positive Matt Stone and Trey Parker etched out their SF episode based on the crowd at Zuni. Jokes aside, the chicken for two is undoubtedly one of the best dishes at any restaurant in the city. There are a ton of really solid french restaurants in SF (s/o L’Ardoise, Absinthe, & Florio) - you really can’t go wrong with any of them, but Zuni is best in class. Go there on a cold night, and get the chicken with a side of fries and you will have an incredible dinner
7) ABV (The Mission). When we drove up from LA first moving to SF, we got in late and had to find a place where we could get a late night meal (and a few drinks as well). We stumbled upon ABV, and kept coming back for more. ABV serves some of the best late night bar food anywhere. Incredible cocktail list. The perfect place to stumble into if your hungry past 10pm in the city (everywhere else shuts down in the city, super lame). The gin and celery cocktail is unique and crave-able. The shrimp tacos are damn near perfect and the burger is a classic
8) R&G Lounge (Chinatown). R&G is probably the best white table cloth Chinese restaurant in the city (and maybe in the U.S.). If you are visiting for a weekend and want to taste something unique to San Francisco, this is exactly the place you should try. The sea bass and salt & pepper crab are must order dishes
9) Harris’ (Nob Hill). Harris’ is everything you want in a steakhouse. Live jazz band. Great cuts of meat. Incredible sides (the onion rings with homemade ranch are insane). Impeccable service. Fair prices. If you’re looking to splurge, Miller & Lux is probably the best steakhouse in the city (and is an incredible pre /post Chase Center hangout), but it will drain your bank account. Go to Miller & Lux when you exit your startup. Go to Harris’ any other time
10) Dumping Home (Hayes Valley). + sister restaurant Dumpling Story in Pac Heights are Michelin star rated dumpling spots that will make you rethink what a good dumpling should taste like. The juicy pork or beef dumplings are up there for best dish in the entire city. Put your name down and get a pre dinner drink at Absinthe
