Kaleb Johnson didn’t know his locker would be next to his college teammate’s. Johnson said Lukas Van Ness was excited and texted him when the trade went down. They used to wrestle in the Iowa locker room.
Kade Pieper would have thrived at center for Iowa. That’s not why he isn’t starting for them at that spot this year. The story is about Cael Winter consistently earning his way into the starting lineup.

There is always a way to get better if you seek it out.
Today UNI got outside to get some sunshine and fresh air. It is not often it is 48 degrees in the middle of January in Iowa. I looked around and spotted Paez, arm in a sling, working on his stance and motion with Wade who is banged up as well. They had every reason to not get up and do something. Hell, Wade is a senior and hurt and is still out there helping his teammate get better.
It brought me back to how many times I’ve witnessed someone say, “Well, I’m hurt, I can’t do that,” or “What’s the point of coming if I’m not at 100%?” It wasn’t until being around my husband, a guy who had some injuries in HS, that I really understood all you can accomplish within the time you can’t participate (how you want) or compete. One thing is for certain- it is not talked about enough.
I think kids struggle the most when injured because they are used to the attention they get when they are not injured. Valid right? I think more coaches could highlight ways that ground can be made regardless if it’s on the mat or on the sidelines. Some of that being mind work, nutrition work, spiritual work, journaling, visualization, video review, or simply watching an individual and asking questions- working to understand the technique more. I know doing any of that takes a lot of discipline. We all know it is a lot easier to feel sorry for yourself and not do any of that. I’m not saying you aren’t allowed a pity party or two, but I’m saying you can’t sit there forever.
One thing I know is true - whether you are injured or not we view improvement on a scale that wasn’t meant for improvement. Improvement a lot of times is only tethered to results or the black and white of success or failure. You can fail and still have improved. To improve means to make better. It didn’t say to become #1 overnight, it didn’t say jump to three a days and just work harder, it is defined as make or become better.
The thing I feel holds us back from improvement is the lack of appreciation for the smallest of steps forward in bettering ourselves. Rome wasn’t built in a day, but did they stop building because it wasn't? No. So why do we look at results to measure improvement in a span day or two and not over the course of weeks, months, years? Im guilty of it. I’m an all or nothing type of girl- my perfectionist really shows out. I’m going to be the best or I’m really going to struggle with not being the best and it’s a battle I fight daily. It is a lot harder to continue to make small improvements when all you see is the mountain ahead and your brain is asking you why you can’t move faster. So I get it, but am I better at how I navigate that than I was 5 years ago - yes.
Now as a parent looking back on my own career I realize just how much improvement could have come from doing 10 minutes of something extra each day. It's not always the time you put into improving as much as it is the focus, the effort, the attitude, the discipline you put forth within that time. All this to say- to those few athletes that read this- yes an injury may keep you out of the game, the match, off the playing field, but it doesn’t keep you from improving your craft in other ways. Seek to improve.
