@BrettSiegelNBA If the middle class teams have 7-8% odds and the worst teams have 3-4% odds it’s basically a 2:1 difference. So bad teams will still get lucky and get picks. It just forces everyone to think about winning versus losing. The incentive to lose goes away completely.
@BrettSiegelNBA They absolutely can sign middle class players. Right now good players sign for minimums because it’s the only offer available for them. If these tanking teams open up their books they can pay more with their cap space.
@BrettSiegelNBA Plus the odds difference for teams 1-14 is like 3% versus 8% for the other teams. You could play with the % to make it make sense better too. But the general idea leads to the right incentives.
Not at all.
1. Teams would sign better players in free agency (middle class). They wouldn’t just sign vet minimums anymore.
2. Teams like the Jazz and Wizards could be in the middle if they just played their dudes instead of benching everyone.
3. The league is already 15 teams in this current situation so that argument is irrelevant.
4. In this model you would have every team trying to win which is the objective.
Here’s what I think makes sense for incentives based on reverse standings. Give the 15-22 teams the best odds 8% each. Teams 1-14 get the rest equally.
Why does this work? It rewards the teams who made the playoffs and who were knocked out in the play in or first round. Everyone who strives to make the playoffs but isn’t a top 8 team gets rewarded.
The terrible teams still have a chance at a top pick but there is no incentive to be terrible. The incentive is to make the playoffs as it should be.
The top 8 teams in the league who advance to second round are the best in the league and shouldn’t get a top pick so you don’t create super teams.
This also would allow those middle tier teams to become a top 8 team way faster because they weren’t far away before the top pick. Thats exactly what you want in the league.
And if you’re a middle class veteran you’re gonna start getting paid again in free agency since being in the middle has huge value and those teams need all the help they can get.
