Jake Tapper just opened his show with a snarky commentary about how much he hates Bari Weiss and Nick Bilton for what they've done to Scott Pelley.
His panel to react? Former network correspondents-turned-Substackers Terry Moran (ABC) and Scott MacFarlane (CBS)
Democratic Maine Senate candidate Graham Platner is facing several scandals. Now-deleted Reddit posts including racist, sexist and offensive language have surfaced. His chest tattoo – a skull and bones, considered a Nazi symbol – sparked controversy that lead to Platner to cover it up. And sexts sent to women while married to his wife, Amy Gertner have made headlines.
Still, Platner is leading in the polls against incumbent, Susan Collins. @aaronlarnavarro reports. #maine #election #democrats
Interesting: @ChmnMendelson is facing some pushback over his now year-long effort to change D.C.'s Open Meetings law to allow the D.C. Council to meet behind closed doors (without press or public) more easily. He's pushing to make what have been temporary changes permanent today.
In 2025, a median of 82% of adults across 138 countries said they were satisfied with their freedom to choose what they do with their life, while 17% were dissatisfied.
That’s fair. I’m conflating the literature they’re citing on the statistical impact of police headcounts from past data and the DC-specific data you’re talking about in the article.
That said- between the fact the guard could detain but not arrest (think that was the correct decision) & that there was little/no coordination with MPD, it seems like a moot point from the start because the job was never clearly defined/allowed as a policing function?
Interesting report from @cuneytdil this morning. Well worth the read.
And highly suggest folks read the report from the Niskanen Center.
“10 percent increase in officer count reduces violent crime by about 13 percent and property crime by about 8 percent.”
All due respect to @cuneytdil but think that was a mischaracterization of the actual report this story is about.
“In more concrete terms, each additional officer prevents roughly 1.9 robberies and 5.1 auto thefts per year at average deployment. There is also evidence that police reduce murders: The point estimates imply that one additional life is saved per year for every nine to 10 officers hired (Chalfin, et al., 2022).“
