At the most basic, borders are lines. Borders fix boundaries. Express power. Allow for the control of people, capital, resources, ideas. Borders help define identities. They delineate belonging. They are part of the process of “othering”.

Borders are real because we make them real. We define them, give them form, we enforce them. Between countries, between states, between political parties, religions, cultures, gender, ethnicity. Even within ourselves. They have impact.
