Over the past few days, we have stepped away from the usual focus of our account. And it could not have been any different.
Last Sunday, Brazil held the first round of its elections, and the country has now entered a decisive presidential runoff between current President Lula and far-right senator Flávio Bolsonaro, the eldest son of former president Jair Bolsonaro. Flávio represents a political movement that downplayed the pandemic, was associated with the political forces behind the January 8 attacks on Brazil’s democratic institutions, and has repeatedly embraced rhetoric that glorifies figures connected to Brazil’s 1964–1985 military dictatorship. Closely aligned with Trump and far-right interests in the United States, his movement also raises serious concerns for us regarding foreign influence and the protection of Brazilian sovereignty. We believe the agenda represented by this movement threatens our democracy, our cultural sector, and fundamental human rights, particularly those of women, Black people, LGBTQIA+ people, Indigenous peoples, and other historically marginalized communities.
The Jude Bellingham Brasil team is made up of three women in our twenties, from three different regions of Brazil. Over the past few years, we have watched the rise of the far right with deep concern, alongside growing political polarization and the increasing presence of hate speech, intolerance, and misinformation in everyday life.
That is why our political stance does not end here.
We will continue to follow and speak about politics throughout the runoff, because we are political beings, and the decisions made at the ballot box have real consequences. Those consequences are not felt equally by everyone. They fall most heavily on those who have historically had to fight the hardest to have their rights recognized: poor and working-class communities, people living on the peripheries, women, Black people, LGBTQIA+ people, Indigenous peoples, and so many other marginalized groups.
For us, speaking about these issues does not mean abandoning the purpose of this page. After all, this is a page dedicated to a Black man of Afro-Jamaican heritage who, despite being one of the greatest players of his generation, has been and continues to be subjected to racist abuse. It would make no sense for us to admire Jude Bellingham on the pitch while remaining indifferent to racism and hate speech directed at Black and marginalized people beyond it.
Our position simply means recognizing that, before we are the administrators of a football account, we are three Brazilian women who live in this country and care deeply about its future. We understand that politics shapes people’s rights, opportunities, safety, and futures.
For that reason, until October 25, our page will also be committed to standing up for what we believe in. Our support has been and will continue to be for Lula — but, above all, for education, democracy, equal opportunities, and every person’s right to exist with dignity, freedom, and safety.
Because, to us, politics is also about this: having the opportunity to dream, to study, to build a future and, above all, having the security and freedom to simply exist.
